San Francisco 49ers
Position of greatest need: Guard
The team’s biggest offseason priority is re-signing left guard Laken Tomlinson, who’s set to become a free agent in March. Doing so would continue the chemistry he and Trent Williams have formed on the left side, would bring back the team’s most durable player and, most important, would provide an element of stability for inexperienced quarterback Trey Lance. Miss out on Tomlinson and the team likely would have to bring in a veteran such as Austin Corbett — which would weaken the Rams — or cheaper free-agent guards like the Buccaneers’ Alex Cappa or the Jaguars’ Andrew Norwell.
It’s possible the 49ers could tap into their own, young depth at guard. But players like Aaron Banks, Jaylon Moore, Colton McKivitz and Daniel Brunskill ought to spend the offseason duking it out for starting right guard, not for right and left guard. — Matt Barrows
With all the ups and downs of Jimmy Garoppolo’s time with the Niners, do you think he will be remembered mostly for being great looking or really great looking? I’ll hang up and listen to your answer. — Jake W.
I’m going to interpret this as: Where will Garoppolo fall in the pantheon of 49ers quarterbacks? I think it will be influenced by how well he does from this point onward. For example, Alex Smith probably is held in higher esteem now — in part because of his heroic recovery from his leg injury in Washington — than he was when he was leaving town in 2013.
In my mind, Garoppolo is in the same general stratum as Smith, Colin Kaepernick and Jeff Garcia right now. Where does he end up? It might depend on what he does at his next stop(s).
What’s a realistic timeline on the Garoppolo trade? Who would you say are the top candidates that would trade for him and what are your guesses on the trade (picks, players)? — George M.
I don’t know the timeline. My sense is that the teams seeking quarterbacks will want to get the best lay of the land before making a decision. Why make a play for Garoppolo in February if Russell Wilson is available in March, right? They will shake the trees for a while to see which QBs fall out.
As far as compensation, I’ve been saying for months the over/under is a second- or third-round pick and I’m sticking with that. People will counter, and rightly so, with, “Well, the Jets got second-, fourth- and sixth-round picks for Sam Darnold while the Eagles got first- and third-round picks for Carson Wentz. And Garoppolo has been more successful than those guys.”
That’s absolutely correct. But I think you have to look at it through the eyes of the coach or top evaluator on the acquiring teams. They look at Wentz and Darnold, see the arm talent (particularly with Darnold) and the movement skills (particularly with Wentz), and can imagine them taking off in a new situation. Garoppolo doesn’t have that upside and might not capture the imagination the way those others have. He’s also been injured. A lot.
Having said that, the conditions seem good for a trade. It’s not a great draft for quarterbacks and there are a number of teams in need of a new starter. It may be a supply-and-demand situation that favors the 49ers, a seller’s market, if you will. It’s just that we don’t know exactly what the supply side of things will look like yet.
Todd McShay projects all 32 picks of April's first round. How does the top 10 shake out? Where do the quarterbacks fall? And which team makes a move up the board?
