Steve Young has been beating the drum for Trey Lance since last season started. Still, he can’t deny the appeal of going after both Brady and Rodgers, and told Tolbert, Krueger & Brooks that taking a swing is too good to pass up.
“To be intellectually honest, this is a time where if you have a veteran quarterback that’s capable, and throw Tom’s stats up from this year, let’s take 10-15% off for next year, still leads the league probably,” Young began on KNBR.
“Remember I said you have to have an owner, a general manager, a coach, the help on the field. If I said which team for a quarterback are the number one, two, three, four teams that have that, the 49ers are right there. If I’m Aaron Rodgers or Tom Brady or anybody — Trey Lance, Jimmy Garoppolo — I want to be here. I want to be there! This is the place.
“If I’m going to be in the NFC and I’m going to pick one of the 16 teams that’s ready, the 49ers are that team. So you ask me that question, what do I think about Tom Brady for one more year or Aaron Rodgers for three years? This team could go win three Super Bowls.
“Now Trey Lance, we don’t know. And Trey doesn’t know. If Trey was ready, Trey would have played. Trey needs to get ready this offseason. This needs to be the biggest boot camp ever in history, to get him ready to be expansive. I told you when I said we’d have to watch him go from two to 10, it’s going to be a process, it’s going to be a patient process, but we cannot wait for that. We’ve got to get him ready, and we’ve got six months to do it.
“But if you’re asking me what I think about Aaron Rodgers coming or Tom Brady…the 49ers are that team, so yes! Yes. I’m not trying to encourage anything, but yes!”
Young believes the 49ers are the most appealing place for a QB in the NFC. So much so, that he also believes Garoppolo should be trying to stay.
“If I’m Jimmy, I’m going to the 49ers saying don’t send me anywhere. If I have a chance to be good or great, the number one place to do it is right here, it’s already been proven. “

Position of greatest need: Guard
The team’s biggest offseason priority is re-signing left guard Laken Tomlinson, who’s set to become a free agent in March. Doing so would continue the chemistry he and Trent Williams have formed on the left side, would bring back the team’s most durable player and, most important, would provide an element of stability for inexperienced quarterback Trey Lance. Miss out on Tomlinson and the team likely would have to bring in a veteran such as Austin Corbett — which would weaken the Rams — or cheaper free-agent guards like the Buccaneers’ Alex Cappa or the Jaguars’ Andrew Norwell.
It’s possible the 49ers could tap into their own, young depth at guard. But players like Aaron Banks, Jaylon Moore, Colton McKivitz and Daniel Brunskill ought to spend the offseason duking it out for starting right guard, not for right and left guard. — Matt Barrows
With all the ups and downs of Jimmy Garoppolo’s time with the Niners, do you think he will be remembered mostly for being great looking or really great looking? I’ll hang up and listen to your answer. — Jake W.
I’m going to interpret this as: Where will Garoppolo fall in the pantheon of 49ers quarterbacks? I think it will be influenced by how well he does from this point onward. For example, Alex Smith probably is held in higher esteem now — in part because of his heroic recovery from his leg injury in Washington — than he was when he was leaving town in 2013.
In my mind, Garoppolo is in the same general stratum as Smith, Colin Kaepernick and Jeff Garcia right now. Where does he end up? It might depend on what he does at his next stop(s).
What’s a realistic timeline on the Garoppolo trade? Who would you say are the top candidates that would trade for him and what are your guesses on the trade (picks, players)? — George M.
I don’t know the timeline. My sense is that the teams seeking quarterbacks will want to get the best lay of the land before making a decision. Why make a play for Garoppolo in February if Russell Wilson is available in March, right? They will shake the trees for a while to see which QBs fall out.
As far as compensation, I’ve been saying for months the over/under is a second- or third-round pick and I’m sticking with that. People will counter, and rightly so, with, “Well, the Jets got second-, fourth- and sixth-round picks for Sam Darnold while the Eagles got first- and third-round picks for Carson Wentz. And Garoppolo has been more successful than those guys.”
That’s absolutely correct. But I think you have to look at it through the eyes of the coach or top evaluator on the acquiring teams. They look at Wentz and Darnold, see the arm talent (particularly with Darnold) and the movement skills (particularly with Wentz), and can imagine them taking off in a new situation. Garoppolo doesn’t have that upside and might not capture the imagination the way those others have. He’s also been injured. A lot.
Having said that, the conditions seem good for a trade. It’s not a great draft for quarterbacks and there are a number of teams in need of a new starter. It may be a supply-and-demand situation that favors the 49ers, a seller’s market, if you will. It’s just that we don’t know exactly what the supply side of things will look like yet.
Todd McShay projects all 32 picks of April's first round. How does the top 10 shake out? Where do the quarterbacks fall? And which team makes a move up the board?

Graziano: One of the sneaky, underreported parts of all of this is that Garoppolo's contract included a no-trade clause for 2021 only. With the 2021 season having ended, Garoppolo no longer has any control over where he goes -- unless, as Nick pointed out, the salary is an impediment for an acquiring team and he needs to do an extension to get a trade done.
But that cap number really isn't a bad one for a competent starting quarterback in 2022. I think he's at the top of the list for teams in this market who can't get Wilson, Rodgers or Watson, and there might be some teams that prioritize him ahead of Watson due to the uncertainty around the Houston QB. The teams I keep thinking of for Garoppolo are Carolina and Washington, both teams that have a desperate need for a QB solution but for various reasons might not be able to land one of the big guys.

The first spring training games are supposed to be played Feb. 26 – two Saturdays from now. When a new CBA deal is reached and the owners lift the lockout – again, this doesn’t appear to be close to happening - Major League Baseball commissioner Rob Manfred estimates it would take less than a week to get spring training started.
The owners and players likely would agree to a shortened spring if it meant starting the season on time – or close to on time – but four weeks likely is the minimum, something Manfred also has said. The league had a three-week “summer camp” in the pandemic-shortened 2020 season, but many players felt like that was a little too quick of a turnaround.
So, that means, for the season to start on time, the players and owners would need to come to an agreement in less than two weeks. That would give them a week (or slightly less) to get spring training started and then four weeks before the regular season starts.
