OHTANI HAD BAY BRIDGE, BART ISSUES—-

Los Angeles Angels pitcher/designated hitter Shohei Ohtani was scratched from his pitching start in the 5-0 loss to the Oakland Athletics on Thursday due to what the Angels described as issues with an accident on the Bay Bridge and with the Bay Area Rapid Transit system.

Angels manager Joe Maddon said Ohtani was on one of the team buses that was stuck in transit due to an accident on the Bay Bridge. Because of the accident, Ohtani had to take BART, but Maddon said there was an issue there as well which didn’t give Ohtani enough time to go through his routine to pitch.

"For us, Shohei's most comfortable, he's pretty much regimented to get everything going about 4 o'clock for his start," Maddon said. "It exceeded that by maybe an hour, so we started calling the audible at that point to not pitch him tonight. And if we're not going to pitch him, we're going to DH him."

Patrick Sandoval started in Ohtani’s place and pitched five scoreless innings with four strikeouts and two walks and allowing five hits,

Ohtani was placed in the lineup as a DH, but his pitching start was moved to Friday, the second game of a four-game series in Oakland between the American League West rivals. Catcher Kurt Suzuki and infielder Phil Gosselin were also on the bus with Ohtani, and are not in the starting lineup. Suzuki will catch Ohtani Friday night.

Ohtani went 0 of 3 with a walk and a strikeout in the loss.

BART tweeted in response that there was no issue with the timing of its trains heading to the Oakland Coliseum.

“First, wow, what an honor to host a baseball superstar like Shohei Ohtani on BART,” the BART account said on Twitter. “We did not experience any issues on our end. We confirmed with Operations Control Center there was no delay for any Coliseum-heading train during the Bay Bridge incident.”

Ohtani was batting .270 with 15 home runs and 38 RBIs in 46 games, and is 1-0 with a 2.37 ERA in six starts with 45 strikeouts in 30.1 innings entering Thursday.

-MORE FAN ISSUES IN UTAH

UTAH:

Three Utah Jazz fans have been banned indefinitely after being removed from Vivint Smart Home Arena for a verbal altercation during the Jazz’s 141-129 win against the Memphis Grizzlies in Game 2 of their Western Conference playoff series on Wednesday.

The Jazz released a statement Thursday saying they have “zero tolerance for offensive or disruptive behavior.” The incident happened on the same night that fans at playoff games in Philadelphia and New York engaged in behavior that resulted in bans from Wells Fargo Arena and Madison Square Garden, respectively.

“An incident occurred last night involving a verbal altercation during Game 2,” the Jazz’s statement said. “Arena security staff intervened, and the investigation resulted in the removal and banning of three Jazz fans indefinitely.

“We apologize to all who were impacted by this unfortunate incident and condemn unacceptable fan behavior. The Utah Jazz are committed to ensuring a safe and respectful environment.”

Grizzlies guard Ja Morant quote tweeted news of the fan ban by saying that his family members should be able to cheer him and his teammates "without getting inappropriate shit said to them."

"My family told me they felt the love from all the other jazz fans who were around them," Morant tweeted. "... even bought each other drinks with a few.

"those 3 just went too far."

The Jazz’s statement comes on the same day a Utah judge tossed out a $100 million lawsuit against the Jazz and Washington Wizards guard Russell Westbrook, according to an ESPN report. The lawsuit stems back to an incident during a March 2019 Thunder-Jazz game in which fans were banned from Vivint Smart Home Arena for taunting Westbrook, who played for the Thunder.

On Wednesday, while walking to the locker room with an injury during Wizards-Sixers Game 2, Westbrook had popcorn dumped on him by a fan. In New York, Atlanta Hawks guard Trae Young was spat on by a fansitting near the court during Hawks-Knicks Game 2.
