The NBA released a memo to players that includes the health and safety protocols for All-Star Weekend, a source confirmed to The Athletic.
The NBA plans to hold the 3-Point Contest and the Skills Challenge before the All-Star Game on March 7 in Atlanta, sources told The Athletic's Shams Charania. The Dunk Contest will take place at halftime.
Participating players will each be allowed four guests and all will be required to test for COVID-19 daily. They will also need to stay at their hotel during the weekend unless they are at the arena for All-Star activities. Players will arrive in Atlanta on March 6 via private transportation.
How we got here
Sam Amick, senior NBA writer: I never knew the legendary Swedish pop group "Abba" had a song about money, but Google taught me as much today when I entered a search about, well, cash.
I nominate that very strange ditty — "Money, money, money" — to be the theme song for the NBA's All-Star Weekend in Atlanta. The league's massive TV rights deal with Turner is the motivating factor here. Not having one complicate matters greatly for the NBA partner. The All-Star Weekend is worth an estimated $30 million in ad revenue alone for TNT.
Biggest takeaways
Amick: There were no bombshells in the league's medical protocol for All-Star Weekend. As I reported last week, players are expected to travel privately, be there Saturday to Sunday and will be restricted to either the hotel or State Farm Arena the entire time while also being tested daily. The only exceptions, as the league memo states, are for medical emergencies or extreme circumstances that have been approved by the league. So no, there won't be an All-Star Weekend party scene this time around.

Most presume he’ll be traded. But here’s the question: If the 49ers don’t want to keep Garoppolo at the balance of his current contract, who would trade for the thing?
Garoppolo has a total compensation package of $25.5 million for 2021 and $25.6 million for 2022. If he were a free agent, would anyone offer him $50.1 million over two years? It’s doubtful.
It’s doubtful because he hasn’t proven he can stay healthy. He missed 23 games over the last three seasons. Dating back to 2016, when he had a four-game audition during Tom Brady’s #Deflategate suspension, Garoppolo got injured in the second game.
So here’s my prediction: the 49ers won’t eventually roll the dice with Garoppolo again, not at his current contract. And since they won’t be able to trade the contract, they’ll eventually cut Garoppolo — taking a cap charge of only $2.8 million.
Because he has no trigger in his contract forcing the 49ers to make an early decision, they can wait to find a replacement before cutting him. Whether that happens via trade (like a Sam Darnold) or free agency or the draft, once they think they have the guy they want, they can get rid of the guy they’ll no longer need.
Maybe I’ll be wrong about this. It wouldn’t be the first time. But it definitely would be wrong for the 49ers to cast their lot again with a guy who has missed a lot of games — especially at $25.5 million.
In the end, maybe that’s the only way he’d stay. By taking less, under the threat of being cut.
QB Jimmy Garoppolo, 30
2020 stats: 3 starts, 94-for-140, 1,096 yards, 7 TDs, 5 INTs
This 49ers will only jettison Garoppolo if they successfully maneuver for another quarterback, which appears unlikely at this point. But as Aaron Rodgers recently said, there are very few absolutes in the NFL. If the 49ers trade or cut Garoppolo, they’d be responsible for only $2.8 million of dead money and would roll in $23.6 million of savings against the 2021 salary cap.
Eagles
TE Zach Ertz, 30
2020 stats: 11 starts, 36 catches, 335 yards
A year ago, Ertz was coming off his third consecutive Pro Bowl season and was considered the third of the league’s elite pass-catching tight ends, along with Travis Kelce and George Kittle. But 2020 treated him about as well as it treated all of us. Contentious contract talks with the team spilled over into the public sphere while Ertz played just 11 games and caught 36 passes for a career-low 335 yards. He and the team have all but said their goodbyes, but the Eagles are more likely to trade Ertz than outright releasing him. They desperately need cap space, especially once Carson Wentz is traded, and moving on from Ertz will save just under $5 million.

I asked Hall voters: What's going on?

Those who watched LeBron’s high school career at St. Vincent-St. Mary High are linked by the belief that James, considered by many to be the greatest basketball player ever, could have been one of the greatest football players ever.
“I think we would’ve been talking about potentially a two-sport Hall of Famer,” said Archer, whose station on Dueber Road is a six-minute drive from the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
“He was going to be Randy Moss,” said David Peterson, a financial advisor who lined up at cornerback against James in LeBron’s junior year.
And then there is the man himself, who, like all of those he convinced of his football potential in parts of three high school seasons, wishes he’d gotten the chance to pursue the sport for which he still has endless passion.
“I always think about it,” said James, who spoke exclusively to The Athleticabout his football career.
He almost did in 2011. Just as Michael Jordan had a mid-career dalliance with baseball, James nearly tried the NFL.
After the Miami Heat were beaten in six games by the Dallas Mavericks, an NBA lockout followed, leaving James to harbor pent-up frustration from a Finals failure and a season on the rocks. As other players around the league played exhibition games, James said he seriously considered an offer to try out for the Dallas Cowboys. He adjusted his training regimen and started running routes again.
Jerry Jones offered him the chance to play. In Seattle, Pete Carroll shipped him a custom Seahawks jersey, along with an invitation.
What may have been seen as a publicity stunt was far from a gimmick to James.
“I would have made the team,” he said. “I would have tried out, but I would have made the team. One thing about it, I don’t mind working for something, so if I would have had to try out for the Cowboys or the Seahawks, or if I’d have stayed home and went back home to Cleveland, I’d have tried (out), but I would have made the team. I just know what I’m capable of doing on the football field. Especially at that age.” James was just shy of his 27th birthday when the lockout ended on Christmas day.
