RED ZONE CHANNEL BREAKDOWN: HOW MANY LISTENERS WATCH AND WHY??
On Sunday NFL RedZone celebrated a significant anniversary: It was show No. 200 for host Scott Hanson and company, a remarkable run that began Sept. 13, 2009.
Watching Sunday NFL football via NFL RedZone has become the preferred choice for more than a million viewers. While NFL RedZone is not counted in NFL viewership, it’s estimated between 1-1.5 million people watch NFL RedZone at some point every Sunday. Why has the option grown in popularity, specifically over the past five years?
“I would say a mix of the continued rise of fantasy football, an increased desire to see action all the time, a growing NFL fan base and word of mouth,” said Allan Flowers, the coordinating producer of NFL RedZone. He has held that title on the show since 2004. “People watch our show if they have a short attention span, their team isn’t playing and/or they want to stay up on their fantasy teams. We have also seen families watch the show together, people having RedZone parties (now socially distanced) and multi-screen experiences (RedZone on one device and a game on another). Our show is available live all over the world, so we are able to expand our viewership at a different rate than a domestic show.”
This year, of course, has been unprecedented for all of sports television because of COVID-19 protocols. Flowers said normally there are more than 10 people in the control room of NFL RedZone — seven staffers in the tape room, two in each edit bay and five people on the stage. COVID-19 has changed that. “Now director J.D. Hansen and the associate director and technical director are in one control room. Producer Brian Nettles and I are in another control room. We have two graphic operators who are in different rooms, three tape operators who are in different rooms and buildings, two tape producers who are in different rooms, two editors who are in a different building and our two production assistants and two broadcast associates, who manage our live graphics, are working from home. The only room that hasn’t changed is the audio room, where we have two people working. Communication just takes a little more time. You can’t tap someone on the shoulder, point to a screen, and look at someone. We really have to be specific about who we want to message and get confirmation that the message is heard and understood. Our engineers have done an unbelievable job making everything has worked as seamlessly as it has, especially in a live environment where you don’t have commercial breaks to reset and regroup if something goes wrong.”
J.D. Hansen has directed all 200 episodes of NFL RedZone and has been a director for the NFL Network since 2003. “My friends all say the same thing — they get to see all the TDs in one place and like the fast-paced action to action nature of the show,” Scott Hanson said of the show’s popularity. “They look forward to our use of the double, triple, quad, and Octo boxes. Those are part of our show DNA.”
I asked Flowers what he thought the next iteration of the show would be.
“Every time I think we have done all we can, something new pops up,” Flowers said. “We have added certain elements — Red Alert, which shows the audience big plays they missed while we were watching teams in the RedZone, and the Witching Hour animation, which we play at the start of the fourth quarter of the early games when wins become losses and losses become wins. I think advancements in technology will allow us to get to games quicker, display which games we are playing audio from when we are in a double or triple box (by far the biggest question we get and we haven’t been able to crack that code yet) and make things smoother for everyone.”

4. ISNT THIS WHAT QBS USED TO DO??? IS IT A COLLEGE THING? IF JIMMY DID THIS WOULD IT BE A BIG DEAL??
https://nypost.com/2020/12/07/unlvs-max-gilliam-regrets-eating-sushi-off-nude-model-on-below-deck/
For many guys, this would be a dream come true. For UNLV quarterback Max Gilliam, it was a mistake.
Eating sushi off a nude model on reality television was not something he’s proud of.
“I would like to apologize for my poor judgment while on the TV show ‘Below Deck’ and acknowledge that I have made a mistake that I will learn from,” he tweeted Monday. “While it was not my idea nor any of my friends’ ideas to eat sushi off of a model, I should have exercised better judgment and declined the idea immediately when it was brought up by the producers.
“This is not a reflection of my character or the way I was raised nor a reflection of the culture of UNLV Football. I would like to humbly move past this and focus my time and energy on our game against the University of Hawaii this weekend.”
Gilliam was one of the passengers, appearing with a few friends. UNLV coach Marcus Arroyo told ESPN Las Vegas the school didn’t know about its quarterback’s appearance on the show until Monday morning.
“When we talk intently about what we’re building here, we mean thoroughly and completely. Each of our players, especially our senior leadership, must recognize that when we go out in public we’re representing this team, this university and the alumni and fanbase,” Arroyo said. “How we conduct ourselves in public is just as important as how we do on the field. I was made aware of Max’s recent statement and it is apparent that he also agrees.”
Gilliam and UNLV are 0-5 on the season. He has thrown for 599 yards with four touchdowns and three interceptions and run for an additional 191 yards and two touchdowns.

THE BEARDED LADY.....
The former heavyweight champion’s exhibition draw against Roy Jones Jr. on Nov. 28 generated over $80 million via more than 1.6 million pay-per-view purchases, according to projections released by Tyson’s Legends Only League and the social-networking service Triller, the fight’s distributor.
Triller owner Ryan Kavanaugh told BoxingScene.com that the Tyson-Jones Jr. bout is expected to rank among the top 10 most purchased PPV events of all-time.
The 54-year-old Tyson earned a reported $10 million for his first sanctioned match since an exhibition against Corey Sanders in 2006.
