Frank Gore. At 37, Gore set the NFL record for games played by a running back Sunday, with his 240th. (Number two: Lorenzo Neal, 239.) Of course Gore is a place-holder for the Jets’ future back. But in the franchise’s lone win of 2020, it was Gore who was the key man down the stretch. Very cool to see. Gore’s been beloved on every team he’s played.

2- WARRIORS -

Warriors’ James Wiseman earns more raves; Draymond Green doubtful for opener

Let’s start with Draymond Green. He scrimmaged two days ago and, after it, woke up in the morning with a sore foot. It persisted. The team had him get an MRI. It came back clear. They’re calling it a mild muscle strain in his right foot and he’s unlikely to play in Tuesday’s season opener against the Nets.

“But we’re trying to be very, very careful,” Steve Kerr said. “So he did not practice today and he’s doubtful for Tuesday. But it’s not a long-term thing. We feel very confident that even if he doesn’t play on Tuesday or Christmas (against the Bucks), he’ll be on the trip and we think he’ll be available quickly.”

This isn’t good for the Warriors or the NBA. Tuesday’s opener in Brooklyn was setting up as a premium, well-watched opener. Both Kevin Durant and Steph Curry are returning from major injuries. Steve Nash is debuting as a coach against Kerr. A skinny Draymond Green was supposed to stomp into the proceedings and spend several possessions guarding Durant and barking.

There is still plenty of reason to watch. But Green’s absence lessens the personal drama and presumably the competitiveness of the matchup. The Nets and Bucks will both be significant home favorites against the Warriors.

But that’s a short-term loss. This Warriors’ season — particularly after the devastating Klay Thompson injury news — should be viewed in a wider scope. And in that realm, James Wiseman’s rapid development is more important than an 0-2 start or just about anything else that happens the next couple of months.

On that front, Saturday was again a positive day. Wiseman felt fine after his first scrimmage. So he scrimmaged again on Saturday. They played two full 12-minute quarters. Kerr put Wiseman with the starters — pairing him as the center with Curry, Kelly Oubre Jr., Andrew Wiggins and Eric Paschall.

“His conditioning looked really good,” Kerr said. “I was very impressed given that he’d only had the one 12-minute scrimmage. He went two full quarters. He played with the starters just so I could get a look at him with Steph and Andrew and Kelly, and he had a really good day. He just looked like he picked up a lot of things in the last few days and is progressing nicely. I’m really excited about James. I think he should be ready to go Tuesday night.”

Will Kerr start Wiseman on Tuesday?

“I haven’t made the decision yet,” Kerr said. “Those are discussions we’re having internally. The balance we’re trying to walk is, hey, let’s get his feet wet. Let’s throw him into the fire a little bit. But let’s not overwhelm him. You could start him, play him with our starters, give him a good four- or five-minute run. Or we could start how we’ve been with either (Kevon Looney) or Marquese (Chriss) and bring James off the bench. Play him in shorter bursts, keep things relatively simple.”

But, again, that’s semantics. Kerr isn’t hiding what’s happening. Wiseman is this team’s starting center, now and probably for the large part of the next decade.

“Yes,” Kerr said. “Yeah. James is going to be our starting center before too long. It might happen Tuesday. But clearly, he is our long-term starting center. When we feel he’s ready for that, we’ll put him out there. Then it’s a matter of minutes, how long he can play.”

If Wiseman were too raw to make an immediate impact on an NBA court, Kerr wouldn’t be speaking like this about him. He’s typically one to temper expectations about younger players. He’s not doing that with Wiseman.

“One of the most exciting things for us about James is his intelligence, his willingness to learn and absorb lessons,” Kerr said. “From three days ago to now, the game looked smoother. His game looked smoother. He recognized patterns, understood what we were trying to accomplish at both ends. Even though there was a ton of energy, there was less wild energy than the first day.”

“We’re excited about his talent,” Kerr continued. “But to go along with that, we’re excited about his maturity, his work ethic and his desire to learn. It’s exciting to all of us. It should be exciting to our fans. But I’ll again reiterate, it’s one thing to scrimmage, it’s another to be out there on the floor with Kevin Durant, Kyrie Irving and the Brooklyn Nets.”

In other roster news, Juan Toscano-Anderson was cut on Saturday, while Mychal Mulder officially made the Warriors’ 15-man roster. They need Mulder’s shooting.

“He’s here,” Kerr said. “He’s on the (15-man) roster for a reason. He’s ready to roll and he could find himself out there Tuesday night.”

Toscano-Anderson is a candidate to fill the vacant two-way spot next to Nico Mannion, who is on the first two-way. But Toscano-Anderson must clear waivers first.
