Did not practice: DE Ford (back), QB Garoppolo (ankle), LB Greenlaw (quadricep), CB Moseley (concussion), RB Mostert (knee), TE Reed (knee), CB Williams (hip)
Full: TE Kittle (knee), RB McKinnon (ribs), CB Witherspoon (hamstring) 9/30/20, 3:31 PM
Shanahan said that both defensive end Dee Ford (back) and tight end Jordan Reed (knee) would go on injured reserve later this week. The team placed linebacker Mark Nzeocha (quadriceps) on injured reserve Wednesday. His spot was taken by tight end Daniel Helm, who spent most of last season with 49ers and who was signed off the Buccaneers practice squad this week.
If he’s allowed to play, Samuel likely will take Ford’s roster spot. Reed’s could be taken by linebacker Joe Walker. Another linebacker, Dre Greenlaw (quadriceps), missed practice and is not expected to be available Sunday.
• The 49ers plan to add veteran cornerback Jamar Taylor to the practice squad, according to a league source. Taylor, who lined up at nickel cornerback for the 49ers throughout training camp, presumably would be elevated to the active roster if K’Waun Williams (hip) can’t play Sunday.
Williams and Emmanuel Moseley (concussion) did not practice Wednesday but Ahkello Witherspoon (hamstring) was on hand.
• Teams can “protect” as many as four players on their practice squads per week from being signed away by another team. Given their injuries at running back, the 49ers this week protected rookie tailback JaMycal Hasty, who was “flexed” to the game-day roster against the Giants.
Raheem Mostert (knee) did not practice Wednesday but Jerick McKinnon (ribs) was on hand.
Those runs Melvin was referring to were the three that crossed the plate for the White Sox after he elected to bring in his closer, Liam Hendriks, with a runner on first and no outs in the eighth and the A’s leading by five. Hendriks, who was statistically the most valuable reliever in the American League during the regular season, was brought in for the eighth because the White Sox had the meat of their order up. He retired the first batter he faced, but then allowed a two-run home run to Yasmani Grandal, changing the tenor of the inning — and the game — with one swing. José Abreu followed with a single and although Hendriks struck out the final two batters of the inning, he threw 27 pitches in the process and was going to be relied on for the ninth, as well.
The final inning began innocently enough, with Hendriks recording strikeouts against Adam Engel and Jarrod Dyson. But it turned in a hurry when Nick Madrigal singled with two strikes and Tim Anderson followed with a single. When Hendriks walked Yoán Moncada to load the bases, Melvin had to come get him after the closer threw 49 pitches in 1 2/3 innings. Jake Diekman walked Grandal to make the game 5-3, but he got the powerful Abreu — who had the biggest hit in Game 1 — on a groundout to end it.
Hendriks’ struggles Wednesday will cause some to question the decision to bring him in for the eighth inning, but it was clear after the game Melvin wasn’t going to let this season end without using his best weapon out of the bullpen.
“Six outs is a lot, but he’s our best pitcher,” Melvin said of Hendriks. “Three-batter minimum (rule) sometimes comes into play in terms of what you’re thinking. It’s the middle of their order. … Even though he threw, what, 50 pitches today, I guarantee he’s available for at least one inning tomorrow.”
TALKING TO CANHA DURING THE GAME — AFTER HE MADE THAT GREAT CATCH????
CANHA SAID IT WASNT AN ISSUE—
It was a pretty easy setup,” he told reporters. “They actually had a wireless headpiece.
“I’m still focused and when a pitch was coming I would like tune out for a second and walk into the game and if I missed a question or something I wasn’t too worried about it, but they did a good job and I think, if the fans like stuff like that then I’m willing to do it because we play this game for the fans.”
Carlos Correa hit a two-out, tiebreaking home run in the seventh inning for the Astros, who produced another stifling pitching performance and swept Minnesota over two games with a 3-1 victory Wednesday that sent the Twins to a record 18th straight postseason loss.
“I know a lot of people are mad. I know a lot of people don’t want to see us here,” Correa said. “But what are they going to say now?”

Kyle Shanahan made it crystal clear Wednesday that the 49ers don't have a QB controversy (via @jenniferleech
No, that scenario doesn’t exist, but I don’t think past one game, either,” Shanahan said during a Zoom news conference Wednesday. “That’s for you to do. But this is Jimmy’s team. He’s done a hell of a job for us. And when he’s healthy, he’ll be playing again for us.”
Shanahan said Garoppolo needs to show that he can protect himself on the field and push off his injured right ankle when he throws. He said he’d like to see Garoppolo look like himself in at least one full-speed practice period this week before giving him the green light to play Sunday.
“Any time you’re dealing with an ankle, it might feel all right when you’re standing there,” he said. “But can you move around and get into awkward positions without hurting yourself? And that’s really what we have to see.”
If Garoppolo can’t play, Mullens will get a chance to build on his impressive Week 3 win over the Giants, albeit against an Eagles defense that ranks fifth in the league in yards allowed through three games.
NICK COULD START FOR: JETS, BRONCOS, JAGS, REDSKINS, GIANTS, BEARS
