MLB:

EVAN LONGORIA VIA TWITTER:  (GIANTS / GRAY ) NOTHING

We are less then a month from the start of spring and once again some of our games biggest starts remain unsigned. Such a shame. It’s seems every day now someone is making up a new analytical tool to devalue players, especially free agents. As fans, why should “value” for your team even be a consideration? It’s not your money, it’s money that players have worked their whole lives to get to that level and be deserving of. Bottom line, fans should want the best players and product on the field for their team. And as players we need to stand strong for what we believe we are worth and continue to fight for the rights we have fought for time and time again.

-ROSENTHAL ON ISSUES FACING BASEBALL

Rosenthal: For the good of the sport, Tony Clark needs to lead the players to a compromise solution on improving the game

SPENDING:

The players, mind you, are not wrong in their ongoing frustration about certain teams not competing to the fullest. Teams say they are smarter. Players believe the clubs are squeezing too hard. As of Wednesday, all but three clubs were under the $206 million luxury-tax threshold, according to unofficial figures. Nineteen were at least $50 million under, 17 were at least $75 million under and nine were at least under $100 million under.

The solution, for now, is for the union to work around the edges of the CBA, propose non-economic measures that might spur competition – perhaps adjustments to the draft based upon team performance, perhaps a deadline of sorts on free agency, perhaps other things. The union, pending approval from the players, intends to introduce not only such measures, but also a broader plan that includes suggestions on how to enhance the on-field product, sources say.

-STARK EXPLAINS REASON FOR CLEMENS, BONDS AS GOOD AS YOU CAN

Stark: My Hall of Fame ballot (this year, it's personal)

The Bonds and Clemens Show

Why do I vote for Barry Bonds and Roger Clemens? It’s not that hard to follow.
The PED era happened. All of it. Somehow or other, the Hall of Fame needs to find a way to acknowledge that it happened.
I don’t know of anybody who is naïve enough to think we haven’t already elected multiple PED users to the Hall of Fame. So how can we have a Hall of Fame that slams the door on the hitter who mashed more home runs than anybody in history and on the pitcher who won more Cy Youngs than any pitcher who ever lived?
I’m not thrilled about the idea of electing players who “cheated.” I’d love to keep the “cheaters” out of the Hall. But how exactly could we do that? Hundreds of players used some sort of PED back in the day. Hundreds. It’s not as if baseball has ever furnished us a list.
Once testing was in place and guys got caught and suspended, that’s a whole different era. But evaluating anything and everything before that is just an elaborate, impossible guessing game – and one we’ve already messed up.
So my policy is simple. I vote for the greatest players of that era. I factor in a different set of standards for players in the post-testing era. I factor in the whole ballot-management mess I explained earlier. But for the best of the best – men like Bonds and Clemens? I feel like my job is to vote for them – and it’s the Hall of Fame’s job to decide how to explain what happened in their time if they ever get elected.
Maybe their induction day is coming. Maybe it isn’t. They’re both at 76 percent in the latest Tracker computations. They both have three elections remaining after this. So we’ll be having this conversation again next year this time.
All I know is, I quit my gig with the morality police force a long time ago. I had no shot of getting that assignment right. But who were the best player and pitcher of the ‘90s? I know I got that one right – and you can find the answers on my ballot every darned year.

GIANTS SOMETHING LIKE:

1. PANIK 2B
2. BELT 1B
3. POSEY  C
4. SHAW LF
