2- GIANTS: GM MEETINGS IN SAN ANTONIO—-
A- BUSTER’S FIRST TIME—- NO THAT THE HOOPLA IS OVER—- HOW WILL HE DO?
(JOHN SHEA)
wouldn’t say that I’m nervous,” Posey said. “I’m more interested to just see how the time is spent for the next three days. We’ve got some meetings with MLB, and then it’s up in the air, whether it’s with other teams or agents. I’m just kind of curious to see how the time is spent because at home, I’m used to a very structured schedule that my wife keeps me on. So we’ll see how it goes here. I’m sure we’ll be busy.”
Asked to explain his vision on how the roster might be shaped, Posey referenced his playing days when, as a catcher and team leader, he was analyzing Giants pitchers, opposing pitchers and everyone else who suited up, including their talent, strengths, weaknesses and character.
Pitching and defense are key, he emphasized. So is makeup.
“Makeup is important,” Posey said. “I want to try to target people who have intangibles that I saw throughout my career with certain players, that I think help create a balanced roster and a winning roster. So you’ve got a lot of work to do to learn free agents, not only what their skillset is as baseball players but what type of person they are as well.”
Posey said in advance of the GM meetings that he had communicated with the 29 other teams – “for the most part” – and arranged individual meetings with player agents for the next three days to discuss free agency. Assistant GM Jeremy Shelley is assisting with the scheduling.
One agent who’ll certainly meet with the Giants is Scott Boras, who represents pitcher Blake Snell, a free agent after opting out of the second year of his two-year, $62 million Giants contract.
“Obviously, you know the rules,” Posey said when asked about Snell, noting teams aren’t supposed to publicly discuss free agents. “I have to be careful with him being a free agent now. He’s a great talent, and you’re always looking for ways to get great talents on your roster.”
Boras also represents middle infielder Ha-Seong Kim, who’s a free agent after playing four seasons with the Padres, two under current Giants manager Bob Melvin. He’s a friend of South Korean countryman and Giants outfielder Jung Hoo Lee, another Boras client who signed last winter with the Giants for six years and $113 million.
Kim is recovering from right labrum surgery, and it’s uncertain when he’ll be healthy to play in 2025. As with Snell, Posey preferred not to discuss Kim’s free agency.
As the interview ended and Posey entered the hotel elevator, he seemed genuinely enthusiastic and exhilarated about this new chapter in his life and career, about wanting to help turn the Giants into a playoff team again. It was evident when he smiled and let out a spirited “Let’s go.”
