HARLAN BEING HARLAN

| | | | | | Kevin Harlan kicked it to Nate Burleson for a studio update. Burleson couldn't hear.
So Harlan did the update himself, impressing Trent Green.

PLAYER OF THE GAME
Niners linebacker Fred Warner reminded everyone why he's the best linebacker in football on Sunday, making several staggering plays in his attempt to disrupt the Vikings offense. He made an impact in every single facet of the game in what will be one of the season's most dominant performances.
Over 21 snaps against the run, Warner racked up five defensive stops, with his average tackle depth coming out to just 1.2 yards past the line of scrimmage. On 30 coverage snaps, he was targeted four times and allowed two catches for 29 yards. However, he intercepted one pass, broke up another and forced two fumbles.

J- TWO SAFETIES IS A BAD PLAN FOR JEFFERSON…..
B- CMC OUT FOR AT LEAST 4 GAMES—- NATIONAL REPORTS SAYING AS MANY AS 6……
49ers coach Kyle Shanahan said the timeline for running back Christian McCaffrey’s return is unknown.
“Nobody knows,” Shanahan said after the 23-17 loss to the Vikings, via David Bonilla of 49erswebzone.com. “We’re dealing with tendinitis, so there’s not one person [who] knows. He doesn’t know. We don’t know. We can take it day by day. By putting him on IR, it’s at least four weeks, so that’ll give him some time to rest and kind of protect him from himself. Us too. No matter how he’s feeling, it’s four at the minimum.”
McCaffrey has spent most of his time rehabbing since Aug. 6, because of a calf strain and Achilles tendinitis. He missed the season opener before the 49ers put him on injured reserve last week.
The earliest he can return is Oct. 10 when the 49ers face the Seahawks.
Shanahan said McCaffrey has not had a setback in his recovery and, to his knowledge, there have been no discussions about surgery.

C- ELDRIDGE TOI AAA
C- IS BUSTER THE GM IN WAITING FOR GIANTS?
I ALWAYS HAVE ASKED WHO THE CLOSER IS…. IT’S BUSTER…
Baggs:
According to sources, the Giants’ executive board led by Buster Posey became so frustrated by the lack of immediate progress between Zaidi and agent Scott Boras after talks began in August that the ownership group took action. Sources said Posey personally dealt with Chapman to hammer out the basic structure of the contract, which includes a full no-trade provision — one of the sticking points that Zaidi had not included in the team’s initial proposal.
Chapman did not dispute this characterization of his contract negotiations but otherwise declined comment, saying he preferred to move forward because the people involved are all still part of the organization. The extension Chapman signed was straightforward — $25 million annual salaries for six years and a $1 million signing bonus — and will begin next season while superseding his previous three-year contract that included two player opt-outs.
Sources interviewed for this story were granted anonymity in exchange for their candor about topics they were not authorized to address publicly. They described an ownership group that valued Chapman’s shining work ethic as much as his steady contributions on the field, that viewed the 31-year-old as someone who could instill both continuity as well as a culture change, and that was adamant to avoid a repeat of last offseason, when a standoff between the Giants and Boras lasted until mid-March.
It was an ownership group that viewed re-signing Chapman as a slam dunk — and did not trust Zaidi and Boras to finish at the rim.
Zaidi declined to comment on the specifics of negotiations but said it was not unusual for ownership to have a hand in talks.
“I viewed myself and ownership working in total sync,” Zaidi said. “This was a priority to get done. I’d expect them to be heavily involved in a deal of this magnitude and they were.”
The real question is how much patience the ownership group will have with Zaidi, the team’s top baseball official who led them to a franchise-record 107-win season in 2021 but increasingly appears out of step with their organizational priorities.
Although Zaidi’s contract is guaranteed through next season with a club option for 2026, sources indicated that his contract status would not be an impediment if the executive board decides a change is warranted. In the meantime, Zaidi continues to oversee efforts for 2024 that include attending budget meetings and reorganizing the pro scouting staff. The Giants informed four pro scouts last week that their contracts would not be renewed as the team shifts from blanket coverage of the minor leagues to a more focused, special assignment approach.
Clearly, the changes are just beginning. But how high will they go?
As one of the brightest spots in an otherwise subpar 2024 season for the team, securing the Gold Glove third baseman long-term ahead of his chance to opt out later this year certainly was important to the fan base -- and the Giants' executive board, led by former catcher Buster Posey.
But with extension talks between Chapman and the Giants beginning in mid-August, the team's ownership group eventually felt forced to take action amid frustration with president of baseball operations Farhan Zaidi and Chapman's agent, Scott Boras, The Athletic's Andrew Baggarly reported Sunday, citing sources.
Posey even went so far as to personally work with Chapman on the contract's structure, Baggarly also reported, citing sources, ensuring the full no-trade clause that wasn't included by Zaidi in the Giants' original proposal was there, per Baggarly.
"It was an ownership group that viewed re-signing Chapman as a slam dunk -- and did not trust Zaidi and Boras to finish at the rim," Baggarly wrote.
