MORE AIYUK WEIRDNESS….IS HE TRYING TO FORCE WAY OUT?
THIS ISNT GOOD FOR BRONNY—- PLAYERS ARE GOING TO GET AFTER HIM — I PREDICT A VERY SHORT CAREER AND A LONG ONE OVER SEAS…

| | | | | | Bob Myers on ESPN: Bronny James' agent, Rich Paul, is calling teams (not named Lakers or Suns) and saying, "Don't draft Bronny, or else he's playing in Australia."
The NBA is so interesting. This wouldn't fly in the NFL.

| | | | | | Jordan Hicks final line: - 5 IP, 5 H, 3 ER, 2 BB, 7 Ks
Exits at 94 pitches, a long 3rd and a misplayed ball in right field ends up being the difference, but not a bad start from Hicks

B- SUSAN SLUSSERR TALKS TO GREG JOHNSON ABOUT MIDWAY POINT…..
81 GAME MARK?
A: I think for all of us what jumps out is we’ve been very inconsistent. I think we have to be a little patient through this period where you get frustrated when you watch every day. We also have to take into account that we’ve been hit with injuries in very key places, and when you try to muddle through with a two-man rotation, it’s pretty difficult.
I think the cavalry is coming soon, with LaMonte Wade back, we’re starting to trend in the right way where we’ll have Robbie Ray back, we’ll hopefully have Kyle Harrisonback, Blake Snell. I think that puts us in a much different place than where we are today. It’s hard to say, “Be patient,” but this is a team that’s battling hard. I would say the frustrations for me are watching mistakes, watching teams run on us freely. Hopefully, we’ve addressed some of that.
INJURIES:
A: It’s tough when you watch the team take the field — that’s not the team we thought would be out there. Losing Jung Hoo Lee early, he’s a guy fans were starting to get behind. The frustrations we’re going through with Blake and getting him ready to go, that’s been difficult, too. The initial signing of Blake Snell was to give us that strength in the rotation. Not having a spring training — I think that shows you how important spring training is, especially for pitchers. As we go forward, signing someone late isn’t something we’d do again, especially with a pitcher. We felt a veteran like him could be ready pretty quickly. I’m sure he’s pretty frustrated as well. You want him to feel like he’s 100% when he’s out there, and he wants to feel like he’s 100%.
Q: Last year, you’d mentioned when we talked that you wanted to keep offseason spending in line with revenues. Did you wind up spending more than anticipated?
A: We don’t go in with any set number — here’s the cap, here’s the target — things change, and being able to get someone of Blake Snell’s caliber and you look at your areas of vulnerability and with a lot of untested pitchers, that was a reason to go out and spend beyond the luxury tax. You want to be nimble and opportunistic and having Blake still available kind of pushed us over that (luxury cap) range.
Q: Would you then have the financial leeway to add more payroll at the trade deadline if there were a player you felt could push you toward a playoff spot?
A: I think we do but I’d caution about any expectations by saying, “Look where we are, we probably have the biggest lift (with returning injured players) of any team out there.” We’re going to look and see what’s available, but we’re not that optimistic that the market will bear much fruit with so many teams in contention right now, and the cost of getting players and giving up a lot of young talent.
We’re going to be careful. We have a lot of young guys who are playing well and who people want to see, and we have a number of players coming back.
With a more stable rotation and someone like LaMonte — he was among the best players in the league and we lost him at a crucial time — but getting him back Friday is a big lift to the team.
Q: Given all the injuries, how do you evaluate the front office? And did Farhan Zaidi ever sign that contract extension we kept asking about?
A: Yes, he signed it right about then. The 2022 draft class right now looks very solid. We’re pushing people a little earlier than we’d like, but they’re producing. That’s very exciting.
Q: You mention the young players — the flip side of the injuries is some of the opportunities they’ve created. What are your thoughts on Heliot Ramos, Brett Wisely and some of the others who have seized those chances?
A: It’s exciting, all these young players look like they’re ready to compete at the top level. The future looks very bright with the number of arms we have and our outfield is very solid with Luis Matos playing well, and certainly Ramos looks like an elite player today. All that gets me very excited for the second half, and for the next few years gives us lots of flexibility.
I think we should all be excited about seeing the youth that’s moving quickly up the system, that’s really the key to everything. We all get focused on free agents so much, but the reality is the farm system is what’s going to drive success. And I think for the first time in a long time we’re really seeing some major talent coming out of the farm system.
Q: Does that mean you might be more likely to move some veterans at the deadline, then, rather than make acquisitions?
A: I’ll leave that for Farhan to answer.
