According to multiple front-office and coaching sources from teams that had been negotiating potential swaps with the 49ers, it’s Samuel who is likely to be the odd man out. A deal could come together before the start of Friday’s second round, or perhaps when a trading partner is on the clock. The 49ers are believed to be seeking second- and third-round selections for Samuel, a first-team All-Pro in 2021.
The bottom line is this: Things change quickly in the NFL, and teams are constantly striving to get younger, more athletic and less burdened by big contract commitments to veterans, especially those who may have peaked physically. It’s a cruel business, and the franchises that win consistently tend to do so by making cold-hearted calculations toward those ends.
That said, Samuel is special, and it’s unclear how much tumult his absence might cause to the 49ers’ ecosystem. He’s not gone, yet — theoretically, the 49ers could keep Samuel and Aiyuk in 2024 and wait until after the season to move on from one of them — but it’s certainly trending that way.
Between now and the end of the second round, Lynch and Shanahan will likely get an offer they won’t refuse, and Deebo’s five-year run with the Niners will be over.
And Pearsall’s career, fair or not, will be viewed through that prism.

You wonder why the #49ers may trade Deebo today? They are number one in spending at WR. That’s not how they want to allocate their money and it sounds like they value Aiyuk over Deebo. With a Samuel trade, they also save $28M after 2024, when they will pay Brock $45-$50 AAV. It didn’t work out last time they essentially traded an expensive vet for a rookie at a positon, but here we are.
