Quarterback Alex Smith was in his fifth season in Singletary’s first full year as head coach. The former first pick of the draft had been a massive disappointment, and moving on would have been best for all. But Singletary liked Smith, saw his potential, and knew he had worked with four coordinators in his first four years. He wanted to give him a chance, and he told him he would.
Then, 49ers owner John York, CEO Jed York, director of player personnel Trent Baalke and other executives called Singletary to a meeting. They had a trade in place with the Steelers for Ben Roethlisberger, who had recently been accused of sexual assault. Singletary vetoed the deal.
He felt an obligation to Smith, and he also believed he needed to stand for what he had been preaching.
“I had been telling the team I wanted a team of character,” he says. “I felt I had to be true to that. But if I could do it again, I’d do it differently.”

In Week 10, the Rams played more two-deep safety shells with light boxes. They wanted to limit explosive plays, even if that meant giving up some rushing yards. But the 49ers methodically moved the ball on the ground and put Jimmy Garoppolo in third-and-medium situations, and he converted.
In Week 18, the Rams switched things up and played more one-high defenses to get an extra defender in the box. They used some six-man fronts, which was the tactic that the New England Patriots used to stifle the Rams’ run game in Super Bowl LIII.
In the 49ers’ first meeting against the Rams, Garoppolo was efficient, and Shanahan didn’t have to put too much on his plate. He completed 15 of 19 passes for 182 yards, two touchdowns and no interceptions. The 49ers ran the ball 44 times in that game.
Week 18 was a different story. San Francisco got down 17-0 early and had to rely more on Garoppolo. He was 23-for-32 for 316 yards but had two interceptions and was sacked three times.
The Rams are a zone-heavy team. They’ve played zone 77.2% of the time through 19 games; that’s the second-highest rate of any team. And they were almost right on that mark (77.9%) in two games against the 49ers.
But no team plays entirely man or entirely zone. And on the occasions when the Rams decided to play man, Garoppolo shredded them, going 12-for-13 for 170 yards (he took two sacks).
Generally, the best ways to attack man coverage are either down the sideline with fades or with crossing patterns. The 49ers rely on quick in-breaking routes, which can be challenging against man coverage, but the 49ers have receivers that can win inside with clean releases and are fearless in the middle of the field. Shanahan seems to have endless avenues for scheming up throws in the middle of the field, which is where Garoppolo is most comfortable attacking. Garoppolo has also gotten better with using his eyes to look off defenders and create space inside.
-Despite Garoppolo’s overall success against the blitz, the Rams found ways to get to him. He went 10-for-14 for 93 yards and was sacked twice when Los Angeles blitzed him in the regular season.
