How do you handle leadership on one of the most unique rosters you’ve been on?
It’s exciting because we’re trying to balance winning now and maintaining our prime years and playing at the highest level versus understanding that everything you do, the young guys are watching, they’re asking questions, they’re trying to figure out what it’s like being a pro at this level. So you show them and tell them all at the same time. But it’s hard because you’re living in the moment and understanding we know what their potential is, and they have a high ceiling. It’s keeping us young, but the one difficult part is there hasn’t been much consistency to their playing time.
I know that’s tough.
Keeping them patient, teaching patience to anybody at this level is really tough because you come into Chase, you come into a road arena, there’s a lot of hype around us and everyone wants to be a part of it. And they’re right there on the doorstep, but there’s no guarantee. That’s the hard part of bringing them along slowly.
How do you see your role in the Kumingas and Wisemans of this team? (Kuminga has strong per-36 minute numbers: 20.3 points, 6.6 rebounds and 1.4 steals per game. Wiseman, who underwent a second right knee procedure last month, is expected to have a more clear return plan in the next two weeks. Should he be cleared for full contact, Wiseman will begin his ramp-up process, play games in the G League for the Santa Cruz Warriors and prepare for a Golden State return.)
I try to give them as much wisdom as I can and hopefully they receive it well. When we were in our first, second, third year in the league — me, Klay and Draymond — we didn’t have this. We had some good vets, Jarrett Jack and some others that helped us become professionals, but no one that had won championships before to come in the locker next to us. Once our guys tap into that, it’s going to look different than some other rookies around the league. Just comparing stats, minutes and opportunities, you have to set your priorities on what’s really important right now and how you can get better so you’re ready when we’re on the stage.
It’s cool to have numbers and everybody wants that … yeah, that might be important to some people, but can you help us win a championship now, next year, the year after? That’s the big question.
How are you feeling ever since you broke the 3-point record at Madison Square Garden? I know you’ve been in some slumps shooting-wise (30.9 percent from 3-point range in the past 10 games) but that was such a high moment.
It’s weird because I’m still feeling the emotions of that. It was so emotional with the lead-up and all of that. It’s nice to have that weight off my shoulder and just enjoy the way that I play the game. Every 3 that I make now is a new record, which is kind of funny, but I still have a lot of gratitude for all the people that celebrated it with me.
You were in Philadelphia facing your brother Seth during the road trip where you broke the record — what was going through your mind trying to set the mark against Seth?
It’s so dope because I see all the videos of us when we were kids and watching my dad play with us. It’s amazing to see. We had different journeys, different paths for us to get here. Obviously I’m checking his numbers, watching his games every night that I can. He’s playing the best basketball that I’ve ever seen him play. From the time we played against each other in the Western Conference finals and have that experience and seeing where he’s taken his game, it’s fun to watch. Proud Curry family all the way around.
What has been your message to Klay in his return? (Thompson is currently on a restriction of 20 minutes — with the plan of gradually increasing by five minutes every few weeks before he is a full-go for the postseason.)
I’ve let him know: There’s no pressure. We got off to a good start this year so that we could have this buffer, this middle part of the year for him to get his legs back and understand what it feels like for his body to play at this level again. Two and a half years is such a long time between games. He can still shoot the ball, still crazy competitive and understands the long game. It’s only been a few games. For him to understand he’s going to get back to the player he is in due time … he knows April, May and June is what it’s all about. I can’t wait to see it.
When you take a look at the MVP race — Durant, Giannis Antetokounmpo, Nikola Jokic, DeMar DeRozan — how do you view yourself and being in the mix all these years later?
You’re trying to put in perspective all that we’ve done — I’m in my 13th year, KD is in his 15th year — and we’re still leading the charge and our teams are still fighting for championships and have realistic chances to get it done. It’s hard to remove yourself from what’s happening right now to understand the historical context of what this looks like and comparisons to other eras.
I understand how amazing it is from a historical basketball perspective but also knowing (Durant) and knowing the guys that are coming behind us that are coming into their primes. We’re trying to hold on for as long as we can, and we want to keep up and stay away from slowing down.
