Rams
The Rams are dealing with a COVID-19 outbreak that is delaying their game against the Seahawks until Tuesday. They have cornerback Jalen Ramsey and receiver Odell Beckham Jr. back, but as of this writing, edge rusher Von Millerand safety Jordan Fuller are among the players still on the reserve/COVID-19 list. If the Rams can find a way to beat the Seahawks, they would match the Cardinals’ 10-4 record but still be in second place in the NFC West because of a worse record in divisional games — currently 2-2 for the Rams, compared to 4-1 for Arizona.
Los Angeles could clinch a playoff berth before Week 16, but it could take the following series of results: A Rams win vs. Seattle, a Minnesota loss or tie on Monday night and an Eagles-Washington tie on Tuesday.
Remaining schedule: vs. SEA, at MIN, at BAL, vs. SF
49ers
At 8-6 after a dominant win against the Falcons, the 49ers have put some distance between themselves and the teams competing for the No. 7 seed. They should be able to further pad their lead against the struggling Titans and lowly Texans in the next two weeks.
Remaining schedule: at TEN, vs. HOU, at LAR
A 17-9 win at Chicago put the Vikings in the seventh and final NFC playoff spot, possibly for only 24 hours. They would retain that spot if Philadelphia beats Washington on Tuesday because the Vikings have a better win percentage vs. common opponents, but they would cede it to Washington if the opposite happens. The Vikings have the edge on the Saints because of a better conference record.
Remaining schedule: vs. LAR, at GB, vs. CHI
In the hunt
Saints (7-7)Washington (6-7)Eagles (6-7)Falcons (6-8)Seahawks (5-8)
The Eagles and the Washington Football Team still have two games remaining against each other, including one that has been delayed until Tuesday, in Philadelphia, because of a COVID-19 outbreak within the Washington organization.
Two NFC teams have been eliminated — the 2-11-1 Lions and the 4-10 Bears.

Fourth down is the new third down
Two weeks ago I micro-analyzed Brandon Staley’s penchant for going against football tradition by consistently going for it on fourth downs when the math told him it advantaged him. On Thursday night, in the 34-28 loss to Kansas City that likely will determine the winner of the AFC West, Staley went for it five times on fourth down—and three times failed.
I asked Champion Gaming chief innovation officer Frank Frigo, a veteran numbers-cruncher at EdjSports, how he felt about each of the five Staley fourth-down calls. He liked four. He didn’t hate the fifth—fourth-and-one at the goal line at the end of the first half—but he would have kicked the field goal there and taken the easy three points. “They probably have a 55 percent chance to convert that into a touchdown,” Frigo said, “but all the benefit of leaving Kansas City with the ball at the 1 if you fail is taken away because it’s at end of the half.”
Frigo said he hopes Staley sticks to his guns, because the math is behind him. “Human beings love to play results,” Frigo said. “If they fail twice on fourth down, the tendency is not to want to go for it on the third try. I hope Staley stays the course. He’s right.”
