2- GIANTS
ONE MONTH IN — WHAT DO WE
KNOW??
Stark: What we learned in April — offense is at 1968 levels (or worse), but must-watch performances are everywhere
Giants win to stay atop the NL West, but how many injuries can they withstand?
The Giants avoided getting swept in a three-game series in San Diego with a 7-1 victory over the Padres on Sunday, but the oldest lineup in baseball is leaking more fluid as the club continues on to Colorado. La Stella strained his hamstring in the fifth inning while scoring on a groundout. He’s headed to the MRI chamber after all.
“He’s going to be down for a bit,” Giants manager Gabe Kapler said.
The bits are adding into quite the bite. Donovan Solano remains on the injured list with no timetable to return from his calf strain. Mike Yastrzemski is also on the injured list because of an oblique strain, although the club is hopeful he will be ready to play by Friday. Evan Longoria has been in and out of the lineup because of a tight hamstring. Brandon Crawford got past an upper side cramp only for his quad to tighten up, and when he got past that, Yu Darvish smoked him with a pitch to the calf on Friday that knocked him out for the remainder of the series.
This is the devil’s bargain that management struck when they shopped the market for complementary lineup pieces and didn’t concern themselves with factory seals. Their position players are the oldest in baseball with an average age of 31.2 years. The Angels and A’s are the only other teams that average in the 30s. And the Giants added another 30-year-old when they acquired Mike Tauchman from the Yankees last week.
A- WEKEEND — LOSE 2-3 BUT MORE SO..... LOSE MORE TO INJURY......
|
| | | | | | Giants updates: Mike Yastrzemski could return to lineup as early as Friday. Reyes Moronta experienced forearm stiffness and will be examined by Dr. Ken Akizuki. Brandon Crawford (calf) out of lineup again, could appear late in game. Donovan Solano (calf) -- no timetable provided. | | 5/2/21, 11:14 AM |
