MARLEAU WILL SET THE MARK TONIGHT —

Patrick Marleau tied Gordie Howe's mark of 1,767 NHL games played when the visiting San Jose Sharks faced the Minnesota Wild on Saturday night.

Marleau, 41, hopped over the boards for his first shift 40 seconds into the game and finished with 19 shifts and 14:16 time on the ice in the Sharks' 5-2 loss.

After the game, the victorious Wild stayed on the ice to salute Marleau, and as a team, held a handshake line with him along the boards.

On Monday night, health permitting, Marleau will set a league record at the Vegas Golden Knights.

"My family is going to be there to help celebrate," Marleau said after the loss. "So, it's going to be super-special having them in the building."

It will add to a lengthy list of accomplishments, of course, for Marleau, who has 566 goals, to go along with 1,196 points, three All-Star appearances and two Olympic gold medals for Canada (in 2010 and 2014).

-COMPETITION NOT GOOD

-1 START IN 2020 WASN’T GOOD AGAINST CENTRAL ARKANSAS

-LIKELY NEEDS TO SIT THE LONGEST

PK ON THE PICK —

3. SAN FRANCISCO. Today’s the last day of substance in fact-finding for the Niners, with GM John Lynch and coach Kyle Shanahan expected in Fargo at North Dakota State quarterback Trey Lance’s second workout. The leader in the clubhouse is still Alabama’s Mac Jones, but that’s all Jones is. Credit to Lynch and Shanahan for keeping a tight lid on their preference. I keep coming back to Jones’ accuracy (his 77.4-percent season in 2020 is the most accurate in major-college history) and his touch downfield, with the best accuracy of the top five quarterbacks on passes thrown 20 yards or more downfield.

I think Shanahan will value accuracy and presence over athleticism and prefer Jones, but that’s not inside info—just my gut feeling.

BAD:

-SATURDAY’S 10 INNING LOSS — HITS MCGEE....AND ONTO THE COVID LIST...

They got a pinch-hit, three-run homer from Austin Slater to cap a five-run seventh inning. They had Jake McGee open the ninth with a two-run lead.

They got a go-ahead RBI double from Brandon Belt with two outs in the 10th. And they were still up a run with two outs in the bottom of the 10th.

All those positives for the Giants made their 7-6, 10-inning loss in Miami on Saturday night that much more difficult for them to swallow.

Jarlín García took the mound to begin the bottom of the 10th. The lefty struck out Brian Anderson, walked Chisholm and got pinch-hitter Chad Wallach on a fly to right.

The Giants were one out from a victory, but Jorge Alfaro drilled a García pitch to left. Courtesy runner Adam Duvall scored easily from second and Chisholm, who has great speed, motored all the way around from first.

Alfaro’s double enabled the Marlins to celebrate their sixth win in seven games.

McGee’s streak of converted saves ended the prior inning.

NERVOUS??

WIN MARGINS (BAGGS)

The Giants would love to avoid one of those games and win easily for a change. They are 9-6 and off to a solid start, but get a load of their winning margins: 3, 1, 1, 2, 1, 4, 1, 3, 1.

COVID AND INJURIES:

Kapler had little choice. The Giants placed closer Jake McGee on the COVID-19 injured list along with right-hander Logan Webb, citing their side effects after receiving their second vaccine dose in recent days. It was a convenient transaction: McGee wouldn’t have been available anyway after throwing 35 pitches while giving up a two-run lead the previous night; Webb is scheduled to start Tuesday in Philadelphia. Because the COVID-19 injured list has no minimum stay, the club can activate McGee on Monday and wait until Tuesday to activate Webb.

-POSEY OUT (ELBOW)

4- WARRIORS:

-CURRY — WHAT CAN YOU SAY — SPRAINS ANKLE THOUGH ...(1-7 WITHOUT HIM THIS SEASON)

Glass half-full: The Warriors are playing their best basketball of the season. They entered Boston having won four straight and nearly beat a Celtics team that’s now won six straight. This wasn’t a bad loss. It was a narrow loss. That’s far more encouraging than the handful of non-competitive national TV blowouts they suffered early in the season.

Glass half-empty: They didn’t win. The Celtics beat them 119-114 with a late flurry and the Warriors left the arena in pain. Steph Curry rolled his left ankle, and Juan Toscano-Anderson needed stitches in the back of his head for a gash suffered on the hustle play of the season. The status of both is up in the air for Monday’s game against a powerful Sixers team. They’re limping into Philadelphia.

Curry’s ankle sprain came midway through the fourth quarter. He curled off a screen up top, tried to plant and twisted his left ankle, crumpling to the floor. He called it “one of the usual ones I’ve had in the past” and said it was a good sign that it felt stable enough for him to play through the pain and finish the game. His status for the Sixers game and beyond will be determined by how it responds overnight and in the coming days. Here is video of the sequence and his postgame soundbite describing the injury.
