Ignacio V. asks: Besides getting a backup quarterback and hopefully a healthy roster, what are the biggest needs for the 49ers for next year?
There will be plenty of occasions to write about this topic before free agency begins in March. And perhaps this list will change as the 49ers start to re-sign some of their current players. But for now I’d rank it like this:
1. Tackle. Yes, I believe the 49ers will try very hard to re-sign Trent Williams, and he seems quite receptive to remaining here. But if they can’t do that? In that scenario, I’d say offensive tackle vaults to the top of their free-agent/draft list. After all, would you want Justin Skule and Mike McGlinchey as the starting tackles next season? Skule played one snap on Sunday and gave up one sack.
2. Defensive end. Here’s the list of 49ers edge rushers signed for next season: Nick Bosa and Dee Ford. One guy is coming off an ACL tear and the other likely will be released before April 1. Yes, you could throw Arik Armstead onto that list, but the 49ers would like to see him playing more snaps at defensive tackle in 2021. He has 1.5 sacks this season and has been stuck on that number since Oct. 4. The 49ers defense is predicated on getting heat off the edges.
3. Cornerback. With Jason Verrett and a healthy Richard Sherman, this position has turned into a team strength. But neither guy is signed for next season. Neither is K’Waun Williams. Heck, neither is Dontae Johnson. In terms of sheer numbers, this will be the position that keeps the 49ers the busiest in the offseason.
4. Center. This is an even bigger question now than when Kyle Shanahan arrived in 2017. At least he had Daniel Kilgore then. Weston Richburg’s future is fuzzy after a patellar tendon injury cost him all of the 2020 season. The 49ers likely will be able to re-sign Ben Garland, but he’ll be 33 by the start of OTAs and missed most of the season with his own injury. Is Daniel Brunskill the future center? Do the 49ers look to the draft? Do they sign 35-year-old Alex Mack in free agency?
5. Wide receiver. The 49ers have two excellent starters in Deebo Samuel and Brandon Aiyuk. But — yeesh — they don’t have much behind that pair. Remember, Kendrick Bourne is poised to be a free agent in March. He might be back, but at some point, maybe in the middle rounds, the 49ers could stand to add a shifty slot receiver who also returns punts. Florida receiver Kadarius Toney, anyone?
Honorable mentions: Strong safety, guard, No. 2 tight end, nose tackle.
