2- NFL: RAIDERS FINED, LOSE A PICK FOR MORE COVID VIOLATIONS—
The Las Vegas Raiders have been fined $500,000 and stripped of a sixth-round pick in the 2021 draft and coach Jon Gruden has been fined an additional $150,000 by the NFL for what one source described to ESPN as "brazen and repeated violations of [COVID-19] protocols."
This came after the Raiders had already been docked $250,000 and Gruden $100,000 for his not wearing a mask properly during the team's Week 2 home opener, and the team was fined an additional $50,000 for allowing a non-credentialed employee access to the locker room following that game.
Also, tight end Darren Waller was fined $30,000 and nine teammates, including quarterback Derek Carr, were dinged $15,000 each for appearing Oct. 5 at a Waller Foundation charity event maskless and mixing with the crowd.
In total, Las Vegas has racked up $1.185 million in fines for breaking COVID-19 protocols, and the Raiders are the first team to lose a draft pick over the violations.
3- THE NBA WILL BE BACK ON DECMEBER 22—
| |||||||||||||||||||||
The National Basketball Players Association voted Thursday night to tentatively approve the NBA’s proposal to start the 2020-21 season on Dec. 22 amid the coronavirus pandemic.
The NBA will play a 72-game season, with training camps opening on Dec. 1, the regular season ending on May 16 and the Finals finishing no later than July 22, sources said. The NBA will play in markets, reduce their travel by 25 percent, and significantly reduce cross-country travel especially early in the season, sources said.
The NBPA has also been considering a potential 72-game season starting on Jan. 18, Martin Luther King Day, which would have called for camps to open Dec. 28, season ending on Aug. 18, sources said.
Several star players on Thursday night’s call, such as NBPA President Chris Paul and Rockets All-Star Russell Westbrook, stated that they want to view the official health and safety measures prior to fully committing to the season, sources said. Westbrook cited the importance of players’ health and safety upon any season opening, sources said.
For the NBA and the players union, the Dec. 22 start made sense over all other options for several reasons: The upwards of $500 million in generated revenue, the television partners seeking Christmas Day games, returning to the normal Oct.-June schedule for 2021-22, and not interfering with the 2021 Summer Olympics.
Here’s what you need to know from Thursday’s NBPA call approving the Christmas Week start, which The Athletic has learned via multiple sources:
— Several players pushed for the start of free agency soon after the Nov. 18 NBA Draft. Nov. 19 and Nov. 20 were mentioned as possibilities.
— The NBA and union are discussing an escrow of player salaries in the 10-to-20 percent range — likely landing around 17-to-18 percent — over the next two years before a hopeful return to the normal 10 percent withholding in 2022-23.
—NBPA executive director Michele Roberts and NBA commissioner Adam Silver spoke on Thursday morning, where the aspect of the television networks “suddenly” pursuing Christmas week came up.
— Health and safety protocols are still being finalized with the league. The NBA and NBPA will conduct daily coronavirus testing. The league and its players union are continuing to monitor the NFL, which is playing in markets.
— There will be a minimum of two percent annual growth in the salary cap and luxury tax for the remainder of the collective bargaining agreement. The expected cap for this offseason is $109 million.
— The NBPA informed players that trade restrictions are expected to be lifted by Nov. 16 — ahead of the Nov. 18 draft.

3- MLB:
-LINDOR AVAILABLE
-ALEX CORA BACK W RED SOX
3 GIANTS OFF SEASON —
ESPN ON WHAT THEY THINK THEY’LL DO — I THINK GAUSMAN — COULD THEY GET INVOLVED WITH LINDOR??
What they could do: Roll the dice on some second-tier starting pitchers.
What we predict they will do: Sign Rich Hill and Jose Quintana.
The Giants finished 21st in the majors with a 4.99 rotation ERA, which, given their pitcher-friendly home park, means the rotation was worse than 21st. They somewhat surprisingly gave Kevin Gausman a qualifying offer, but he was the team's best starter in 2020, fanning 79 in 59⅔ innings. (Look for Gausman to accept the offer.) Baseball ops president Farhan Zaidi is
familiar with Hill from their days with the Dodgers, and while Quintana suffered a lat injury in 2020, he's otherwise been extremely durable.
16. Kevin Gausman, RHP, age 30
Gausman was so screwed up while he was in Baltimore, including the inexplicable decision by the coaching staff to move him to the extreme third-base side of the rubber, that it seemed likely he’d never justify being the fourth overall pick in the draft back in 2012. He got out of Baltimore and went to a good pitchers’ park in 2020, signing a one-year deal with the Giants that resulted in the best strikeout and walk rates and lowest FIP of his career. I think it’s real and sustainable. He has always had the plus velocity and plus split-change to be an effective big-league pitcher, and this year the Giants largely just let him pitch instead of trying to make him fit some predetermined template. His splitter was filthy, with hitters missing nearly half the time they swung at it, and he threw it more than ever. He could still use a better breaking pitch, as his slider doesn’t miss bats in the zone and he’s really never had much of a slider or curveball. But with those two pitches and the command and control he showed last year, he could be a good fourth starter for almost any club.
BAGGS pick:
17. Ha-Seong Kim, SS, age 25
Kim might be the only major free agent to come to Major League Baseball from either the KBO League or Nippon Professional Baseball this winter, and he gets to come as a true free agent because he turned 25 in October, thus avoiding the restrictions placed on so-called “amateur” international free agents based solely on their ages. He has been one of the better hitters in Korea’s major league for several years now, ranking seventh in OBP and 11th in slugging percentage in 2020 (as of Oct. 18). He has split time between shortstop and third base for Kiwoom the last two years, and scouts think he’s not a lock to be able to stay at short in MLB, possibly moving to third or second or just becoming a utility infielder who moves between all three. At the plate, he has good hand-eye coordination and some power, but he gets long and his front side goes very soft in his swing, so hitting MLB velocity consistently could be a real problem. The possibility of shortstop with some power could get him offers as a regular, but I think a more suitable projection would have him as a super-utility guy who gets 400+ at-bats.
