If the Giants win three games against the Padres, they’ll be in good shape. But there would still be a chance for the Brewers or Cardinals to win four out of five, the Reds to win out, the Marlins to win three or four games and the Phillies to win out. The Giants would have a 20-20 record against the NL West, which would mean they wouldn’t win the tiebreaker against any of those teams. They’d be out.
But if the Giants win two games this weekend, they could win a postseason spot outright if the Brewers and Cardinals trade wins and losses, and the Phillies win just one game. Or the Marlins could go into the toilet, which would give the second NL East spot to the Phillies, and the Giants could sneak in that way. Or …
You get the idea. It’s a mess. There’s a chance for everyone to lose, except either the Cardinals or Brewers, which would even allow a streaking Mets or Rockies into the postseason.

If the Giants don’t make the postseason, though, this will be the one. This will be the winnable game that haunts you all winter, if not every remaining winter. With a one-run lead in the seventh, a Giants reliever with a 7.24 ERA blew a save. Then in the 10th, with the winning run on second base, the Giants hit the ball hard. With the winning run on third base, the Giants hit the ball harder. But the Rockies won the game in the 11th with a ground ball and fly ball, both outs.
Again, for those of you late to 2020: The winning run didn’t score for the Rockies because they got a runner on base with a hit, walk, hit batter, error, defensive interference or dropped third strike. It scored because they hit a ground ball and a fly ball. Both outs.

The Giants have a deep bullpen long on options, if a bit short on dominance. The rotation gets a boost from Kevin Gausman, who missed a couple of turns but was very good in his last outing. Then his elbow tenderness resurfaced. San Francisco needs Gausman intact if they do survive the regular season because he's the Giants starter most likely to match the output of an opposing ace.

It's hard to see how a forecasting season would like the Giants, given the number of on-the-downside hitters in their regular lineup. Such systems also cast a wary virtual eye at out-of-nowhere producers such as Mike Yastrzemski, Donovan Solano and Alex Dickerson. However, the Giants rank fifth in the NL by OPS+ by adhering to their systems, not ours.
Ace left-hander Clayton Kershaw will start Game 1 of the team's best-of-three series next week, with right-hander Walker Buehler following him in Game 2, manager Dave Roberts announced Wednesday, according to Ken Gurnick of MLB.com.
The team's Game 3 starter - if one is needed - hasn't been chosen yet, Roberts said.
Kershaw leading the Dodgers into the playoffs is hardly surprising - the three-time Cy Young Award winner owns a sparkling 2.15 ERA and 0.76 WHIP with 59 strikeouts and only eight walks this season, despite missing some time early on due to a back issue.
Buehler is currently on the injured list with a blister, but the club expects to activate him Thursday. The 26-year-old owns a 3.86 ERA and 1.01 WHIP with 36 strikeouts in seven starts this year, and a lifetime 2.72 ERA in the postseason.
L.A. will use southpaw Julio Urias in relief Wednesday to prepare for the playoffs, with reliever Joe Kelly starting in his place as an opener. The Dodgers made the move to get Urias used to pitching out of the bullpen if he needs to in the postseason, according to ESPN's Alden Gonzalez.
Fellow young starters Dustin May and Tony Gonsolin may also pitch in relief during the final regular-season games in preparation for the role in October, Roberts said, per Gonzalez.
