Contract Notes
The 49ers signed Dee Ford to a five year, $85 million contract on March 14, 2019. Ford received $20.5 million fully guaranteed at signing and a total of $45 million in injury protection. The fully guaranteed portion of Ford's contract is made up of an $8 million signing bonus, $7 million roster bonus paid in 2019, and his 2019 base salary. If on the roster on April 1, 2020 his base salary that year will become fully guaranteed. His 2021 salary has a partial injury guarantee. In each year of the contract there are $750,000 in annual per game roster bonuses and $100,000 in workout bonuses from 2020 through 2023. He can increase the total value of the contract by $2.5 million based on being selected to the Pro Bowl in each season. The 49ers restructured Ford's contract in 2020 for salary cap relief by converting $12.74 million of his salary into a bonus. The move creates $9.55 million in 2020 cap room and increases Ford's cap charge by $3.18 million in each of the remaining seasons of his contract.

FOX NFL RIGHTS FEEDS COULD NEARLY DOUBLE:
Fox Corp. is willing to spend as much as $2 billion a year to maintain its rights to National Football League games on Sundays, a huge increase from its current contract, according to people familiar with the matter.
… Talks between the league and the networks are already underway, but at an early stage, Fox Chief Executive Officer Lachlan Murdoch told investors this month.
“The NFL has asked, I think, all the broadcasters to think about every package, and to think how would we monetize packages that we currently have or other packages differently,” Murdoch said. “So, we’re looking at all sorts of options.”
…Other networks are interested in the Fox games and have been pressing the league to reconfigure the rights to allow them to air some of them, according to the people, who asked not to be identified because the negotiations are private.
A boost from $1.08 billion a year for the Fox Sunday package to $2 billion would be huge, but it would fit with the general projections from an anonymous network executive to CNBC in December 2019, which suggested that the NFL could see average annual payouts of $8 to 10 billion a year under its next media deals (up from the current more than $5.2 billion if you don’t count Verizon and Amazon’s streaming-only deals, or more than $5.7 billion if you do count them). The Fox Sunday package rising from $1.08 billion to $2 billion would suggest that other packages are likely to significantly rise also, and that would do a lot towards getting the NFL to that $8 to $10 billion annually.

SILVER ON NEXT SEASON — BIGGEST NEWS OLYMPIANS WILL LIKELY BE FROM NON PLAYOFF TEAMS—
We’ve said a week or so ago that the earliest we would start is Christmas of this year,” Silver told Costas. “But the more I’m learning, even listening to Dr. [Anthony] Fauci this morning, I continue to believe that we’ll be better off getting into January.
“The goal for us next season is to play a standard season […], 82-game season and playoffs. Further, the goal would be to play games in home arenas in front of fans. But there’s still a lot that we need to learn in terms of rapid testing, for example, would that be a means of getting fans into our buildings.”
If the intention is to play a full 82-game season with playoffs, that could push the 2021 campaign into late August or early September. That would likely affect the start of the following 2021-22 season as well.
But the bigger headline is that such a schedule would also prevent NBA players from participating in the 2021 Summer Olympics in Tokyo. The Tokyo Games are scheduled to be played July 23 through Aug. 8, when the NBA regular season could be concluding. Additionally, the delayed schedule would prevent NBA players from participating in qualifying rounds for the Olympic tournament.
Silver seemed to indicate that NBA players could still play in the Olympics, but those athletes might come from non-playoff teams.
“There are a lot of great U.S. players, and we may be up against a scenario where the top 15 NBA players aren’t competing in the Olympics, but other great American players are competing,” Silver said. “And, obviously, there are many NBA players who participate in the Olympics for other countries. That’s something we’re going to have to work through.”
