PAVS SHOWS UP:

I figured something was going on, so I took a look up at the jumbotron,’’ Couture said, “and there he was.”
Joe Pavelski, the Sharks’ long-lost captain, emerged from a tunnel near the team’s bench as part of a Game 5 cameo specifically (and secretly) designed to jolt some energy into the crowd at a crucial moment.
Pavelski, who has not played in this series because of a head injury suffered in Game 7 of the first-round series against Vegas, was dressed in a dark suit and a teal tie — alas, no sweater yet. But the biggest fashion statement was his smile.
The image of Pavelski grinning and waving a towel in support of his teammates hit the big screen during the stoppage of play. And when that happened, well, just be glad that SAP Center has a sturdy roof.
“That was as loud as this building gets,’’ Couture said after a 2-1 victory over the Colorado Avalanche. “I had goosebumps on the ice.”

-And because they did, the Sharks helped close out a victory that puts them up 3-2 in the best-of-seven series. They are one win away from the Western Conference finals — where Pavelski, who led the Sharks with 38 goals during the regular season, might actually join them as something beyond a cheerleader.
“Closer’’ is the word coach Pete DeBoer used when asked about Pavelski’s progress. “I can’t handicap it. But he’s getting close.”
-CONTROLING MCKINNON:
And, with that, the Sharks’ leading goal scorer might have made a bigger impact on the proceedings than his Colorado counterpart. Avalanche star Nathan MacKinnon, who had 41 goals and 58 assists (99 points) during the regular season, struggled just to get a shot off in the pivotal Game 5.
MacKinnon had one shot on goal in his 22 minutes, 49 seconds of ice time.
One. Shot. All. Night.
“Our game plan against MacKinnon is trying not to let him play on the offensive end,’’ Couture said. “It’s very difficult to do. He’s such a good player.
“He’s going to get his looks. He’s going to get the puck in the neutral zone. But I thought for the most part we eliminated his chances tonight.”
This part of the victory, of course, took more than just waving a towel. Brent Burns and Marc-Edouard Vlasic did the heavy lifting against MacKinnon, taking turns shadowing, badgering and tormenting the All-Star center.
MacKinnon spent most of his night against those two — 12:34 against Burns, 12:48 against Vlasic when both teams were playing 5-on-5, according to Natural Stat Trick.

HERTL BREAKS OUT:
Hertl, the Sharks’ leading scorer among forwards in the regular season with 74 points, had just a lone even-strength point through the first four games, as well as an assist on Brent Burns’ meaningless power-play goal at the end of a Game 2 loss. In Games 1, 3 and 4, Hertl didn’t find the scoresheet at all, and his disappearance in the 3-0 loss in Game 4 at Pepsi Center on Thursday, in particular, was perplexing.
But just like throughout the 2018-19 regular season, his sixth in the NHL and quite easily his best, Hertl’s cold streak didn’t last long. He scored a gigantic power-play goal late in the second period on Saturday at SAP Center in Game 5 and added the game-winner six minutes and 26 seconds into the third as the Sharks took a 3-2 lead over Colorado with a 2-1 win.

CURRY'S SHOT -

"As a competitor I know he's pissed with himself and I think that will bode well for us."

Steph has been off against the Rockets, but Draymond isn't worried about the greatest shooter in NBA history.

QTNA: Will Stephen Curry bounce back? Stephen Curry is coming off a 17-point performance against the Rockets in Game 3 in which he missed seven shots in the restricted area. That not only was a career high, but tied for the most in a single postseason game by any Warriors player over the last 20 years. Curry was just 3-10 (30%) on open shots in Game 3, including a missed dunk with 19 seconds remaining. He’s shooting 35% (25% 3-pt FG) in this series. QTNA

-THE SERIES

: Is there any answer for Kevin Durant? Kevin Durant had 46 points in Game 3, already his third 45-point game of the postseason. He became the sixth different player in NBA postseason history with at least three 45-point games in a single playoff year, joining Baylor, Jordan, West, LeBron and Iverson. Durant is also the first Warriors player ever to do it. Durant has led the Warriors outright in points in seven straight playoff games. According to the Elias Sports Bureau, that’s the longest such streak by a Warriors player in a postseason since Rick Barry in 1967.

QTNA: Has regular season James Harden arrived? James Harden is coming off his first 40-point game of the 2019 postseason and his eighth 40-point playoff game overall.

Eric Gordon added a career-playoff high 30 points for the Rockets in Game 3. The 71 points that Harden and Gordon combined for was the fourth-m'S HAD WORSE
ost by a Rockets duo in a playoff game.

NOT HEARING ABOUT THE FINGER HES HAD WORSE

Curry is averaging 18 per game in this series. In last year’s series vs. Houston he scored 18 and 16 in the first 2 games before going for 35, 28, 22, 29, 27 in final five

NBA PLAYOFFS:

TOROTNO --PHILLY

The Raptors beat the 76ers 101-96 to even their Eastern Conference Semifinals series at two games apiece. Kawhi Leonard had 39 points, 14 rebounds and 5 assists and became the second player in NBA history to score at least 150 points while shooting at least 60% from the field through the first four games of a playoff series. Shaquille O’Neal also did it in the 2000 NBA Finals (ELIAS). This was Leonard’s sixth 30-point game this postseason, the most in a season in Raptors history. It was his fourth consecutive game with 30+ points, extending his Raptors playoff record.

-KENTUCKY DERBY

WHAT ELSE IS BAFFERT GOING TO SAY?

Tim Layden (@SITimLayden)
Many trainers backed DQ of Maximum Security in Derby, but Baffert told me: ``No one calls an objection in the Derby. It’s always a roughly run race. Sometimes you’ve got to take your ass-kickings with dignity.’’ My follow-up story:
si.com/horse-racing/2…

According to Scott T. Miller of The Action Network, Maximum Security’s disqualification cost bettors approximately $42 million in possible winnings, and that was just for win/place/show wagers through the online gambling service at Churchill Downs. One bettor risked $8,000 for a possible payout of $44,000 only to learn that Country House would be named the winner.
Again, that is only for one type of wager through one particular betting service. When you factor in all the different types of wagers that included Maximum Security winning through all of the different gambling mediums, both legal and illegal, the number would be significantly higher than $42 million.
At the same time, that also means millions of dollars were paid out to bettors who placed their money on Country House and initially thought they had lost.
The outcome of Sat SAY?

urday’s race marked the first time in the Kentucky Derby’s 145-year history that a horse that crossed the finish line first was disqualified. While the decision has been highly controversial, a video of the finish appears to show that the right call was made by the Churchill Downs stewards.
