For the past two years the 49ers have been thwarted in their attempt to grab a pass rusher because none of the good ones became unrestricted free agents and there were few in the draft. This year:
Expected to become free agents March 13: Ezekiel Ansah (Detroit), Anthony Barr (Minnesota), Barrett (Denver), Flowers (New England), Fowler (Rams), Markus Golden (Arizona), Bruce Irvin (Atlanta), Shane Ray (Denver), Preston Smith (Washington), Za’Darius Smith (Baltimore).
Expected to be drafted in the first two or three rounds: Bosa, Josh Allen (Kentucky), Rashan Gary (Michigan), Ferrell (Clemson), Sweat (Mississippi State), Burns (Florida State), Jachai Polite (Florida), Zach Allen (Boston College), Jaylon Ferguson (Louisiana Tech), D’Andre Walker (Georgia), Oshane Ximines (Old Dominion), Chase Winovich (Michigan).
Of the free agents listed above, several have ties to the 49ers. Personnel executive Martin Mayhew drafted Ansah in Detroit and new defensive line assistant Kris Kocurek coached him there. Another front-office executive, Adam Peters, was in Denver when the Broncos brought in Barrett and drafted Ray. (Ray was a first-round pick while Barrett went undrafted, but Barrett will be the more coveted of the two).
Finally, defensive coordinator Robert Saleh worked with Fowler in Jacksonville and Irvin in Seattle.
