Latest offer to Pelicans from Lakers is Ingram, Ball, Kuzma, Zubac, Hart and two first round draft picks. A Boston deal in offseason is expected to look like this - Tatum, Smart, Williams, Horford and up to 3 first round picks.

ZAIDI TALKS AHEAD OF FAN FEST

Alex Pavlovic (@PavlovicNBCS)
First question to Farhan Zaidi at media session is about Harper. He doesn’t like speaking about these things, but joked “it’s kind of hard to deny (a meeting) when your CEO gets made in the casino.”

arhan Zaidi said the Giants still plan to add multiple experienced outfielders before the season. There’s mutual interest with Bryce Harper and Zaidi said their meeting lasted for a few hours.

See Kerry Crowley's other Tweets

Zaidi said there’s obviously mutual interest between Harper and Giants. “That was an expression of our interest level, to make a trip out there.”

WHAT OF'S ARE THERE:

ADAM JONES,

MLB:

HENERY'S 5 THINGS W GIANTS:

1. Is this Bruce Bochy’s final year as manager?
Odds are it is. His contract expires after the season, he turns 63 in April and new front-office chiefs usually want to pick their own managers.
There is a significant “however” here. Bochy helmed three World Series title teams and remains popular in San Francisco. Zaidi has to respect who Bochy is and what he has done in 12 seasons with the Giants.
2. Will Madison Bumgarner be traded?
Like Bochy, Bumgarner is a World Series hero, but fans increasingly understand the benefits of restocking the farm by trading potential free agents such as Bumgarner versus letting them walk for nothing or signing them to nine-figure contracts.
Zaidi said his office has made no outgoing calls on Bumgarner, but if the team fails to contend, as expected, he will get no shortage of incoming calls from contenders that always seem to be one big starter short at the trade deadline — assuming Bumgarner pitchers like the Bumgarner of old.
3. Can the Giants get bounceback seasons from veterans?
Joe Panik, Buster Posey, Jeff Samardzija, Mark Melancon, Brandon Belt, Evan Longoria. Holy Toledo that’s a lot of players who had down seasons because of injuries, ineffectiveness or both.

Who will man the outfield on Opening Day?
It’s possible this question has not been as open-ended since players drove to the ballpark in Model Ts. Who’s going to start in right field, Bryce Harper or Drew Ferguson? It’s a pick-’em!
The Giants have five outfielders on their 40-man roster: Steven Duggar, Mac Williamson, Austin Slater, Chris Shaw, and Ferguson, a former Astros prospect and Giants Rule 5 draft pick. They also invited minor-leaguers Henry Ramos and Anthony Garcia to camp, while Zaidi still hopes to add one or two veteran free agents.

5. Is there another Dereck Rodriguez in the system ready to surprise in 2019?
If we knew now, it wouldn’t be a surprise, would it?
Zaidi’s A’s and Dodgers did a good job identifying underappreciated talent. Garcia, who hit 25 homers at Triple-A last year, could be a candidate. Starter Logan Webb, added to the 40-man roster, made a huge leap in the Giants’ system in 2018. They also have a homegrown infielder named Ryan Howard who might be a factor.
As in past years, the farm system is not flush with majors-ready talent. Unlike past years, the prospects they do have should get long looks under a new management team that is not married to the older players who preceded it to San Francisco.

Say goodbye to the disabled list.

Major League Baseball is renaming its designation for hurt players the "Injured List" and getting rid of the DL, a fixture in the game since 1966, a source familiar with the plan tells ESPN.

MLB RULE CHANGES?

Jeff Passan (@JeffPassan)
Re-upping my news story on the dueling rules-change proposals from MLB and the MLBPA. One thing worth highlighting: The union is pitching the universal DH to be implemented for this season, sources tell ESPN. Remains to be seen how amenable MLB is to it. es.pn/2Gca0nw

Dueling proposals from MLB on Jan. 14 and the union on Friday covered a wide range of topics, according to sources. Among them include:
  • A three-batter minimum for pitchers N
  • A universal designated hitter Y
  • A single trade deadline before the All-Star break N
  • A 20-second pitch clock N
  • The expansion of rosters to 26 men, with a 12-pitcher maximum N
  • Draft advantages for winning teams and penalties for losing teams N
  • A study to lower the mound N
  • A rule that would A low two-sport amateurs to sign major league contracts /whatever

Good news, baseball purists. Rob Manfred says MLB won't be adopting a universal DH in 2019.

There is some bad news though. It could still happen in 2022.

A few changes I would love to see in ⁦‪@MLB‬⁩:

- Less games with every Monday off

- Balanced schedule

- Only 7 game series in playoffs

- Best overall records determine the seeding in playoffs.

- More netting to protect fans from foul balls and bats flying into stands.
