There’s significant worry about the playing surface at Azteca Stadium, a multi-use combined grass-and-synthetic surface used for soccer and concerts mostly, made soupy by heavy rains in this year’s rainy season. Recent photos of the pitch look awful. The NFL will mobilize there today and tomorrow to see if surgery will be needed on the field before the game.
LEVAN BELL
teelers running back Le’Veon Bell must report to the team by Tuesday at 4 p.m. to ensure he gets a credited year of service, which would enable him to be a free agent in March at age 27. As Adam Schefter reported Saturday night, Bell is not expected to report, meaning he would not play football at all in 2018 and would head into free agency in March hoping to make up the $14.5 million he lost by not playing under the franchise tag in 2018.

Goat of the Week
Eagles fans, Philadelphia. For booing the Eagles off the field at halftime in Week 10. It hasn’t been the season you’d want in Philly. And you’re losing to the Cowboys, toothlessly, 13-3. But booing the crap out of the team that delivered a stirring Super Bowl win nine months ago? Bush league.

Discussions continue about whether Monday night’s Chiefs-Rams game will be played in Mexico City, LA or postponed, per sources. NFL determined to play it Monday night in Mexico City, but the field is “a mess” and might not be safe for players. It’s a significant concern.

49ERS:
THE GAME:
-for the 49ers it was another loss — there have been six since Kyle Shanahan took over last year — in which they blew a second-half lead. Breida’s second touchdown of the game, an 11-yard pass from Mullens, had given them a 20-10 advantage early in the third quarter.
-It also was another game in which the 49ers suffered a critical bust in coverage — on Beckham’s 20-yard touchdown in the third quarter — and one in which they lost the turnover battle, this time 2-0.
-The 49ers knew the Giants would target Beckham on Monday and they did — throwing to him 11 times and only completing four passes.
Two of them, however, were for touchdowns, the first coming in the opening quarter when the 49ers were in a zone defense.
Beckham lined up all over the field, sometimes on the left side of the 49ers defense opposite Sherman, sometimes on the right against Witherspoon and at other times in the slot.
One of his completions — for 13 yards — came with Sherman in coverage. The rest were to the other side of the field. Manning also badly under-threw a deep pass to Beckham in which the receiver had two strides on Witherspoon early in the third quarter.
-It was a coverage bust,” veteran cornerback Richard Sherman said. “He played it like he was supposed to play it. It was a good call, it should have been a good play and in two-man you have to play it like he played it. When you play two-man, you play two-man and he played two-man. It was unfortunate the way the call came in and we didn’t get the right guys on the field and it was just kind of a cluster.”
But Sherman’s support for the young cornerback ended there. Both he and Shanahan admonished Witherspoon, who had been benched earlier in the season, for being so demonstrative after the play.
“You shouldn’t ever do that,” Sherman said. “That is like a cardinal rule in football.”
Said Shanahan when asked if he was OK with such an emotional reaction: “No, I am not. No. Man up. Don’t put that on tape. We’ll deal with it when we come in.”
Manning’s white jersey stays conspicuously clean
It turns out the 49ers’ eight-sack effort against the Raiders was a mirage, an aberration.
On Monday, they reverted to the squad that has had a hard time putting pressure on the quarterback as they sacked Manning only once and hit him a total of four times.
Manning didn’t have a prolific outing. He finished with 188 yards on 31 attempts. But he threw three touchdowns, including the game-winner with just under a minute to play, and finished with a 110.7 passer rating. His white jersey looked pristine at game’s end.
One of the keys for the Giants is that they didn’t put themselves in a lot of third-and-long scenarios, the situation that was so favorable for the 49ers in Week 9 against Derek Carr and the Raiders.
Instead, the Giants mostly had solid gains on first and second downs and did a good job of protecting Manning. He entered the game having been sacked 31 times, the third-most sacks allowed in the NFL through Week 9.
Giants catch on to Kittle
Kittle led all pass catchers Monday with nine receptions for 83 yards. But he had only 17 yards after halftime and none after the Giants started their comeback midway through the third quarter.
“They started cutting crosses, bunching me up, because I like crossing routes because I get open a lot,” Kittle said.
He later explained what that meant: The Giants essentially brought one of their safeties down closer to the line of scrimmage to head off the crossing routes that were so effective for Kittle in the first half. His nine receptions were a career-high and his 775 receiving yards rank third among NFL tight ends this year.
His longest catch in the second half, a 14-yard gain on third-and-12, was wiped out when he was called for offensive pass interference. The 49ers had to punt two plays later.
“You’ll can ask Coach Shanahan that,” Kittle said of the play. “I was trying to get open.”
-espite the injury, Breida has managed to be one of the most explosive parts of the 49ers’ offense. On Monday, he had three plays of 19 yards or more, scored his team’s only touchdowns and averaged 5.9 yards a carry. The far more heralded Barkley, who was the No. 2 overall pick in the recent draft, averaged 3.4 yards a run.
“Matt’s just as hard-nosed and as tough of a competitor as you can get,” tackle Mike McGlinchey said. “He runs so hard. He makes it a lot of fun to block for him. He’s a great leader on this football team, and you don’t expect anything less than that from Matt Breida to give you everything he’s got. He’ll do that if he’s on one leg. He’s that kind of a guy. He’s been awesome all year.”
