ON THE FARM: HOW MUCH LONGER DO THEY WAIT?

OF Mac Williamson: It’s Williamson’s world and we’re all just livin’ in it so far this season. Williamson homered in four straight games this week and had 11 hits in 21 at-bats. For the season, Williamson has a .548/.659/1.129 line with five home runs in nine games. He’s also walked seven times against only four strikeouts. Williamson was impressive this spring in big league camp, showing off new hitting mechanics. If Hunter Pence continues to struggle, the Giants may turn to Williamson in left field.
OF Chris Shaw: Shaw is also putting himself in that left-field discussion. He has 13 hits in his first 42 at-bats (.310 BA) and he’s homered three times. On the flip side, Shaw’s strikeout numbers jumped considerably this week. He has three straight multi-strikeout games and 16 in 10 games this season.
OF Austin Slater: Slater is keeping up with the Joneses in the River Cats outfield. He’s off to a red-hot start, with a .423/.516/.731 line in 26 at-bats. The River Cats are crowded in the outfield, so Slater has been getting work at first base in pregame drills and could debut there in a game in the near term.
OF Steven Duggar: After a rough first week of the season, Duggar had better results this week at the plate, going 8 for 24 (.333 BA) with three walks. All three of those walks came on Saturday in a game in which Duggar reached base five times.
PADRES:

-The Giants got boat-raced 10-1 on Sunday and dropped three of four at Petco Park. It marks their sixth consecutive trip here without taking a series victory, despite all the orange dotting the stands.
Their struggles against the Padres are emblematic of their steep slide that began with the 2016 All-Star break. The Giants were 9-0 against the Padres in the first half of that season. Since then, they are 10-23 against them.

MLB:

Compared to last season at this juncture, the Boston Red Sox are down about 2,500 fans a game. For the Chicago Cubs and St. Louis Cardinals, it’s nearly 5,000. The Cleveland Indians’ average crowd has dropped more than 5,000, the Texas Rangers’ more than 7,000 and the Pittsburgh Pirates more than 7,500. The Toronto Blue Jays, Detroit Tigers and Kansas City Royals each are in the 8,000-fan range, and the Miami Marlins are pushing 10,000. The most severe is the Baltimore Orioles, who have played six games at home and are at almost 16,000 fewer per.
Even if some are obviously weather-related, the numbers are nevertheless staggering. The average crowd of 27,532 over the 221 MLB games played this season is about 2,700 fans per game lower than last year through the same point. Over the course of a full season, that would amount to a drop of more than 6.5 million fans.
Now, the last time the league suffered through an April with more postponements than this was 2007. Over the first 225 games that season, the average crowd was 29,888. By the end of the year, that number leaped to 32,704 per game for a total of more than 79.5 million, still the largest attendance figure in the game’s history.

49ERS:

WHAT'S THE HARM IN LETTING SITATUON PLAY OUT W FOSTER? ARE FANS GOING TO CANCEL SEASON TICKETS?

t was a mutual decision by the Niners and Foster that he remain away from the team for the start of the offseason program, according to NFL Network's Jim Trotter. The team is expected to meet with Foster and his representative this week. At this point San Francisco does not have a defined plan for how to give Foster structure while away from team activities, per Trotter, but that is something the 49ers hope to finalize when meeting with Foster.

-I'M FINE WITH 49ERS LETTING THINGS PLAY OUT ---FOSTER KEPT AWAY, RIGHT MOVE

Sometimes your best draft choices are the picks you don’t make.
The Saints were thinking that way last week, when San Francisco linebacker Reuben Foster—a target of New Orleans late in the 2017 first round—was charged with felony domestic violence. Authorities in California said Foster dragged his girlfriend by the hair, punched her in the head eight to 10 times, and punctured her ear drum. The 49ers are letting the legal system run its course, for now, but if the charges prove true, it’s hard to imagine Foster stays on the roster of a franchise with a recent history of sordid acts by prominent players.
Saints coach Sean Payton told me Saturday he thinks New Orleans still would have chosen Wisconsin tackle Ryan Ramczyk with the 32nd overall pick last April, even if the 49ers hadn’t jumped ahead of the Saints to grab the 31st overall pick, which was used on Foster. I was in the 49ers draft room last year, and the most dramatic point of the weekend was the Niners feeling they struck gold by stealing Foster from the Saints. Foster told the Niners—and later told me—that Payton was on the phone with Foster minutes before it was going to be the Saints’ choice and said the Saints were going to pick Foster. Foster also said Payton asked to speak to Foster’s girlfriend. According to Foster, Payton asked the girlfriend, “Are you going to be the guidance to be sure Reuben doesn’t get into trouble?”

“This was part of our fact-finding late in the round,” Payton said. “I hadn’t had a chance to meet his girlfriend during the pre-draft process, and we were still in the process of deciding. I think we were going to take Ramczyk anyway, but I wanted to talk to her about Reuben.”
Meanwhile, the Niners traded with Seattle to move to the 31st slot, picked Foster, and rejoiced at what they considered at the time was a big win for the franchise. Turns out it’s verging on being a huge loss for the franchise. But Payton had more of a there-but-for-the-grace-of-God-go-us feeling Saturday than a feeling of spiking the football in the end zone because Foster went elsewhere. “It’s tragic, and it’s sad,” Payton said. “I just feel awful when those things happen.”
Avoiding Foster turned out to be the stroke of great fortune that helped GM Mickey Loomis, asistant GM Jeff Ireland and Payton have the franchise’s best draft since 2006 (Reggie Bush, Roman Harper, Jahri Evans, Zach Strief, Marques Colston). Here’s how good it was:
