-RICHARD SHERMAN PRESSER TODAY

ON MENTORING FOSTER:

On Tuesday, the Santa Clara County District Attorney’s Office said no decision has yet been reached whether to pursue criminal charges against Foster.
Sherman said he has not spoken to Foster but he will be willing to be a mentor to Foster and provide him with support. Sherman said he has heard a lot of great things about Foster.
“If I can help him, I’ll do my best,” Sherman said. “I look forward to meeting him and being a teammate of his, and helping him in any way I can. To think I can change everything he does, I’d be foolish to say I could. But am I going to try my best to help him and put him in positions to be more successful in the future? Yes, I am.”
PLAYERS TRIBUNE ON HOW IT ALL WENT DOWN

ON NEGOTIATIONS:

ut I wasn’t just going to fly by the seat of my pants. I downloaded past contracts from the NFLPA database and, with the union’s help, spent a lot of time studying the language and structure and nuances within contracts. And when all was said and done, and the 49ers and I had agreed to terms, there were a lot of things I got out of the deal that I wanted.
Under my previous contract with Seattle, I had no guaranteed money for 2018. In my new deal with the 49ers, I get a guaranteed $3 million signing bonus right off the bat and another $2 million if I pass a physical before November 11, which is the last day a team can bring a player off the PUP list. And in a sport where contracts aren’t fully guaranteed, money in hand is better than anything. So $5 million for just signing the contract and passing a physical is a big win for me.
But there was also a lot that the 49ers got that they wanted.
Outside of this past season, I’ve never missed a game in my NFL career. So on top of my signing bonus and my $2 million base salary for 2018, we put incentives in the contract that will pay me more depending on how much I play — on both a per-game basis and a percentage of defensive snaps — as well whether or not I make the Pro Bowl or the All-Pro team. All in all, including my signing bonus, I could earn as much as $13 million for 2018.
It gets a little complicated after that. But basically, if I never get back to the Richard Sherman everybody has become accustomed to seeing on the field, the 49ers are protected. They won’t overpay for somebody who’s not on the field and who’s not playing at a high level.
And if I do get back to that level — which I fully intend to do — then I’ll be compensated accordingly.
WHEN HE'LL BE BACK:

I’ll get there, too. My rehab has been going phenomenally well, and I think that I’m going to come back better than ever. Realistically, I’m on pace to be back on the field doing drills by June, and there’s no doubt that I’ll be ready to play come Week 1. That’s not even a question.

ON FANS:

It’s just amazing to me how quickly people forget.
I’m very appreciative of — and humbled by — all the 12s who have shown me support over the last couple of weeks. Throughout my time in Seattle, you guys have been nothing short of amazing. I’ll always have love for the 12s.
But this whole process has definitely made me more aware of the hate and hypocrisy that’s out there.
You got fans calling me a traitor and burning my jersey when they probably know that if they got fired from their job tomorrow, and a competitor offered them more money, they’d take it in a heartbeat.

-49ERS SIGN FORMER TOP 10 PICK G COOPER:

The San Francisco 49ers signed veteran guard Jonathan Cooper to a one-year deal on Tuesday.
General manager John Lynch said in a statement that Cooper will compete for a starting job with the 49ers.
"Having started 27 games in four NFL seasons, Jonathan brings great experience to the interior of our offensive line," Lynch said in the statement. "We look forward to him competing for a starting job at guard, while also bringing a veteran presence to our locker room. Jonathan is a welcome addition to our team."
he 28-year-old Cooper suffered a sprained medial collateral ligament in his knee during the season finale against the Philadelphia Eagles and had postseason surgery. The belief is he will be able to return to the field for organized team activities and the June minicamp.
Injuries and subpar play led to his demise with the Cardinals, who drafted him No. 7 overall in 2013. In 2016, Cooper was part of a trade to the New England Patriots that sent pass rusher Chandler Jones to the Cardinals. He made the Patriots' 53-man roster but was inactive for four games before he was released. The Cleveland Browns claimed Cooper, and he started three of the five games he played before he was cut by Cleveland.
He signed with the Cowboys during the bye week of the 2016 playoffs and was inactive for one game. He returned to the Cowboys on a one-year deal.

13TH IN THE NFL.COM POWER RANKINGS:

People haven't been this jacked about the 49ers since Jim Harbaugh's introductory press conferenceover seven years ago. Garoppolomania is approaching the Tebow stratosphere, with recent free-agent acquisitions only boosting the adrenalized exuberance over a team that finished the season with five straight wins. Carlos Hyde could be a loss, although he was a peaks-and-valleys player for most of his career in Frisco. That said, you'd think Jerick McKinnon was the second coming ofMarcus Allen, given the fans' reaction to his signing and the money the Niners are doling out for him.
ERS SHOULD LOOK TOO---

RAIDERS 20TH:

No one seems too sure what Chucky and those Raiders are up to -- my colleague quipped that the team looked at a fantasy mag from three years ago and started making moves. Jordy Nelson andDoug Martin aside, Oakland jettisoned kick-return ace Cordarrelle Pattersonshipping him to the Patriots, who never do reclamation projects ... or is that always. Hopefully that move turns out like the Randy Moss acquisition. Or not. Marshawn Lynch is back for another year. Somewhat under the radar, Beast Mode was effective in spots. Perhaps Gruden can find a better way to use the masked mauler on the ground this time around.

-RYAN GRANT SETTLES FOR ONE YEAR PROVE IT DEAL WITH COLTS AFTER RAVENS DEAL FELL THROUGH (OR THEY WANTED CRABTREE MORE)

NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport reported that it's a prove-it deal for one year worth $5 million.
Grant originally agreed to a $29 million contract with the Baltimore Ravens during last week's free-agent negotiating period. The deal was subsequently voided when he did not pass a physical with the Ravens.

QUESTIONS ABOUT THE LIST

-TEAMS THAT MADE THE BIGGEST IMPACT  (WARRIORS #1)

2016-17 WARRIORS:

Keating's score: 2.40
Key stat: Went 16-1 in the postseason, the best showing in a single NBA postseason, ahead of that of the 2001 Los Angeles Lakers (15-1) and 1983 Philadelphia 76ers (12-1).
Keating's take: Your eyes aren't deceiving you. Golden State took a crew that went 73-9, added Kevin Durant and got even better. Last year's Warriors outscored opponents by a humongous 11.6 points per game, by far the biggest margin of any NBA team in the past 20 years. Golden State had an effective field goal percentage of 56.3 percent, highest in the league, while limiting foes to 48.6 percent, lowest in the league. The Warriors led the NBA in assists, blocks, steals, forced turnovers and plays after which fans rewound their DVRs to see them again. They went 16-1 in the playoffs. They're in the middle of the most dominant run you're ever going to see by any team.

Methodology

×
We used our unpatented five-step process to determine the most dominant athletes of the past 20 years. First we looked at the top league in every sport that has global annual revenues of $100 million or more and for which there are reliable annual overall rankings or ratings of individual athletes for all or most of the past 20 years. Then we rated those sports' athletes in each of the past 20 regular seasons by the best single performance metric available, adjusted these ratings to normalize athletes' scores in each sport across time, narrowed our focus to the top four athletes each year in every sport, then adjusted the data again to put these players, across sports, on a common baseline. Then we added up the results to achieve this list, in which one "dominance share" equals one standard deviation of performance by an athlete beyond the top four players in his or her sport for one season.

If you’ve ever criticized a sports team in front of one of the team’s most passionate fans, you’ve likely been accused being a “hater” and had your argument quickly dismissed. It doesn’t matter if you presented objective evidence to demonstrate how you drew your conclusion — e.g., suggesting that an NFL quarterback is bad because his statistics are worse than any other quarterback — because, to these passionate fans, there’s no such thing as a valid argument against the teams they support.
Sports fandom is an extremely emotional exercise for many fans and this often causes them to interpret objective criticism of their favorite teams as a personal attack. And this thought process and behavior isn’t exclusive to any one team. Every sports team has fans that vehemently come to its defense the second someone says something even remotely critical of it.
But why is this? Why do some sports fans irrationally defend their favorite teams against objective arguments?
