PHELPS DOESN'T ACTUALLY RACE A SHARK:
Clearly, we can’t put Michael in one lane and a shark in the far lane,” said Dr. Tristan Guttridge, a shark expert involved in the show.
For the contest, researchers developed what they described as a cutting-edge water vehicle to record a great white’s speed along the same stretch of sea. A man rode this vehicle ― with bait attached ― as a real great white raced behind him. The shark was recorded going 100 meters in 36.1 seconds.
For his big showdown with his fishy rival, Phelps swam the same 100-meter stretch. But he was filmed alone with images of a CGI great white displayed alongside him.
Alas, Phelps lost the contest, but by only by 2 seconds. He clocked a time of 38.1 seconds, putting him almost on pace with the great white, whose top speed was 26 mph, according to the Hollywood Reporter. Great whites also are known as one of the fastest sharks on the planet.
