KIPER'S MOCK:

ike the Browns, the 49ers could also use this pick to solve the quarterback question either via draft or trade. Given the current state of the rebuild, I suspect they're more likely to draft a quarterback or move down for more picks. Trubisky is my top-rated QB and the likeliest of the current crop to land here. Also, don't be so sure that new coach Kyle Shanahan doesn't want to work with a young QB. He worked with a young Kirk Cousins and did some good things with Brian Hoyer.

Such a move would mean a pay increase from $19.95 million to $23.94 million, in accordance with the CBA’s stipulation that calls for a 120-percent raise for a player playing under the franchise tag for a second straight year. But that would all but guarantee that Cousins hits the market as an unrestricted free agent next season, because a third straight franchise tag would mean paying him $34.5 million in 2018.

Avoiding that scenario gives the Redskins additional incentive to get something done this offseason. It’s believed that Cousins could command a four- to five-year deal worth between $90 million and $110 million, with $50-$60 million guaranteed.

Kirk Cousins, QB, Redskins: The Redskins tagged Cousins at $19.95MM last season, so a repeat tag would cost them $23.94MM. If they go that route, they’re likely to use the non-exclusive tag on the QB, according to one Redskins beat writer. That means that Cousins could be stolen away by another club desperate for quarterback help (like the 49ers or Browns), but it would cost them two first-round picks. There has also been talk of a tag-and-trade scenario, but that sort of thing is more suited for the NBA.
