49ERS:

WILLIAMS TESTED POSITIVE:

49ers LT Trent Williams tested positive for COVID-19 last week, which casts doubt on his availability for Sunday’s game. Williams was on the COVID-19 list two weeks ago as a close contact of someone else, but last week he was placed on the list following his own positive test.

Williams is a cancer survivor and therefore in a high-risk category, but he told me he was feeling OK and expected to be fine. Still must clear some hurdles if he's to play this week, depending on when he tested positive and whether he

WHAT DID WE FIND OUT ABOUT TAYSOM HILL LONG TERM?? (HES NO LAMAR EVEN THIS YEAR)

Taysom Hill did the job on Sunday. The stats look great: 18-of-23, 223 yards and a 108.9 passer rating. The reality is less spectacular. He missed some throws and was bailed out on others (most notably on a 44-yarder to Emmanuel Sanders, an attempt that was badly underthrown and forced Sanders to come flying back toward the line of scrimmage to get it). But he was also effective in the run game—the 10-yard touchdown he scored in the fourth quarter featured Hill breaking some angles taken by defenders that he should not have been able to break—and he didn’t shrink in the moment. An uneven start that led to just three points and two three-and-outs over New Orleans’s first four possessions wound up giving way to a 12-of-13, 173-yard finish that spanned the last 35 minutes of game action. “Your first start ever in the NFL, I think he called one formation flipped around the wrong way,” Payton told reporters postgame. “All of that calmed down and he got very comfortable with the flow of the game.” Now, does it mean that Hill will be the Saints’ starter five years from now? It does not. But it showed, again, that Payton can win with different quarterbacks and that, unsurprisingly, the New Orleans roster is plenty strong to keep the team rolling through a change like this one. Remember, the Saints were 5–0 last year with Teddy Bridgewater in the lineup and won handily last week with Jameis Winston at quarterback. That doesn’t mean they’d win a title with whatever at the position, of course. But it does mean they manage their team in ways that mitigate the problem of losing their future Hall of Fame QB.

NFC WEST BREAKDOWN AFTER WEEK 11-

NFC West

Status: Buckle up

Contenders: Seahawks (7-3), Rams (6-3), Cardinals (6-4)

The NFC West is the antidote to the NFC East. Though none of the teams in this division is perfect — in fact, each has some very real flaws — you could also make an argument that all three of these teams deserve a spot in the NFC playoff field. The NFC West has exciting quarterbacks (Russell Wilson and Kyler Murray), dominating defensive players (Aaron Donald and Jalen Ramsey in LA; Bobby Wagner in Seattle), creative coaches and entertaining games.

It’s a nearly impossible race to handicap because it feels like every NFC West game will be a toss-up, even those including the 49ers, who continue to deal with a ridiculous rash of injuries.

For now, the Seahawks are in first place, but that could change Monday night if the Rams beat the Bucs.

Wild-card hopefuls: If the playoffs started next week, the NFC West would have three teams in: the division champ plus two wild cards. The 49ers, at 4-6, are in the next tier down of teams that at least have something to play for in December.

Best remaining games: Every division game. The Rams still have to play the Cardinals twice, and the Week 16 game between the Rams and Seahawks could shift the balance of power in the West.

Forget about it: Everyone is still alive, even if the 49ers’ hopes are slim.

-BLAKE SNELL AVAILABLE??

https://www.mlb.com/news/blake-snell-trade-scenario-rays

A reigning Cy Young Award winner is currently available on the free-agent market, but could another former winner be on the move via trade this winter?

According to multiple sources, the Rays have told other clubs that they’re open to the idea of trading Blake Snell, presenting a realistic possibility that a deal could be consummated this offseason.

• MLB Hot Stove rumors

A source noted that Tampa Bay is not actively shopping Snell, who has three years and $39 million remaining on his five-year, $50 million extension, but given the financial losses the Rays endured during the pandemic-impacted 2020 season, trading the 27-year-old represents the club’s best chance to create some much-needed flexibility.

Snell will earn $10.5 million in 2021, $12.5 million in 2022, and $16 million in 2023.

Fresh off the second World Series appearance in franchise history, dealing Snell would be a bold move for the Rays, though the club has made similar moves in the past with the trades of David Price and James Shields.

• Offseason checklist: Rays' needs and moves

“I’m guessing they think this is the best chance to kill it on the market,” a rival American League executive said.

A source close to Snell said word of a potential trade has even made its way back to the 2018 AL Cy Young Award winner, noting that Snell is committed to Tampa Bay and would love the opportunity to remain with the Rays.

Trevor Bauer, who won this year’s National League Cy Young Award, is the top starter availableon the free-agent market, but Snell would represent an upgrade from any other free-agent starter; Charlie Morton, Masahiro Tanaka, Jake Odorizzi and Taijuan Walker headline the second tier of available arms beyond Bauer.

Among the teams believed to be interested in acquiring Snell are the Angels and Mariners.

Seattle GM Jerry Dipoto has a lengthy trade history with Erik Neander of the Rays; the two teams have been involved in 10 trades together since Dipoto arrived in Seattle in September 2015.

Should Snell be on his way out of Tampa Bay, his preferred destination would likely be Seattle -- his hometown. The Mariners have the No. 4 farm system in the game, according to MLB Pipeline, giving Dipoto plenty of ammunition to make a trade.

Tampa Bay has already declined options on Morton ($15 million) and Mike Zunino ($4.5 million) this offseason, while Hunter Renfroe was designated for assignment last week as the Rays chose to cut ties with the outfielder rather than pay him whatever he commanded in his second year of arbitration.

For the Rays to create payroll flexibility, they would have to move one of the three players on the roster making significant money: Snell, Kevin Kiermaier (two years, $23.5 million left on his deal, plus a $13 million option for 2023 with a $2.5 million buyout) or Yoshitomo Tsutsugo (one year, $7 million remaining on his contract).

Could the Rays find a taker for Kiermaier? According to two executives, that scenario would only be likely if Tampa Bay were willing to pay down his contract.

One other potential factor? “Who loses out on [George] Springer?” one AL executive said.

If Tampa Bay wants to chop payroll in order to give itself other options to improve the team, a Snell trade represents the best chance to accomplish that goal.

“He would bring back a massive return,” an NL executive said.
