PAPA AND LUND OCT 28 2020

GUESTS:

10:35 - BOB STITTS

-INVENTOR OF JETS SWEEP, FLY SWEEP

-WHY SO HARD TO DEFEND?

National media appearance[edit]

Stitt became known to people outside the CSM community, when Dana Holgorsen, the head coach at West Virginia University, gave him credit for the fly sweep play his Mountaineers team used to great success in the 2012 Orange Bowl.

2019 PIECE:

BOB STITT, a man often regarded by his peers as one of the most creative offensive minds of his generation, is about as far removed from the NFL as an innovator could possibly get. He's currently the offensive coordinator at Texas State University, and prior to that, he spent most of his career working like a mad scientist to cook up new offensive formations he then used at far-flung college football outposts like the University of Montana and the Colorado School of Mines.

But this year, like something out of a fever dream, Stitt has seen little snippets of his artistry regularly unfold on the game's biggest stage.

Whenever it happens, he can't resist calling out to his wife, Joan, even if she's in another room.

Hey, honey, he says. They're running my play again.

Great, Joan Stitt typically responds in a deadpan. So when are you going to get paid like those guys?

Stitt believes the Texans, with Case Keenum, were the first NFL team to run the fly sweep pass, on a 34-yard gain to Damaris Johnson in 2014. Former Bengals wide receiver Andrew Hawkins believes he ran a version of the play with Andy Dalton in 2013 under offensive coordinator Hue Jackson. Regardless of who was first, it didn't really become a regular part of offensive packages until this year, when the Rams and Chiefs made it a semi-regular feature. The Chiefs were the first team to use it in a game and the first team to score a touchdown running it, debuting it in Week 1 with a 1-yard flip from Mahomes to De'Anthony Thomas for a touchdown.

Compensation update: Seahawks are sending OL B.J. Finney and a 7th-round pick to the Bengals in exchange for DE Carlos Dunlap, per source.

C- What the Fuck WAS GOING ON WITH JUSTIN TURNER??

ROSENTHAL:

Major League Baseball had gone 58 days without a positive test.

AFTER THE GAME:

League officials, league security personnel and some Dodgers officials spoke with Turner, asking him to remain in isolation, according to a source with knowledge of the situation. Turner, however, was adamant about wanting to join the celebration, the source said, and he had the support of at least some club officials.

“We’re going to get him a picture, then get him off (the field),” one Dodgers official said. “We can’t deny him that. The guy is the heart and soul of the organization.”

The emotion of the moment was undeniable for Turner, who as the team’s longest-tenured position player had played in six straight postseasons without winning a title. But in the middle of a pandemic, at the end of a season in which the league, team personnel and players, including Turner, took great care to remain safe, the scene was difficult to justify, if not downright irresponsible.

Turner, 35, did not practice social distancing as he hugged and shook hands with teammates, remaining on the field for perhaps 20 minutes and often standing close to his wife, Kourtney, who also had been part of the Dodgers’ bubble. He wore a mask, but removed it for photos with Kourtney and also for a team photo in which manager Dave Roberts was to his immediate right and president of baseball operations Andrew Friedman was to his left, with only the World Series trophy between them.

WHEN:

MLB said it learned in the second inning that the result of Turner’s test from Monday had been inconclusive; the league had been shipping hundreds of tests from Texas to its lab in Utah each day, and the results typically came back in the early evening. Once the uncertainty about Turner arose, the league asked the lab to expedite his test from earlier Tuesday. When the result came back positive, league officials told the Dodgers to remove Turner from the game.

Why didn’t the league exercise an abundance of caution and get Turner off the field immediately after learning he might be positive? Apparently, because inconclusive results are not uncommon, and the standard procedure was to run a second test.

Would Game 7 have been played on Wednesday if the Rays had rallied to defeat the Dodgers? The league said it would have reviewed the matter with its medical advisors, but similar circumstances during the regular season normally led to postponements.
