SANTA CLARA, CA - JANUARY 11: San Francisco 49ers fans cheer for the team in the fourth quarter of their NFC divisional playoff game against the Minnesota Vikings at Levi's Stadium in Santa Clara, Calif., on Saturday, Jan. 11, 2020. (Anda Chu/Bay Area News Group)
California continued to loosen its COVID-19 restrictions Tuesday, announcing that counties in the moderate and minimal risk tiers on the reopening system could hold outdoor professional sports events with a limited number of spectators in attendance.

But not in Santa Clara County, which criticized the state’s guidelines in announcing that no spectators will be permitted at San Francisco 49ers and San Jose Earthquakes games this year. Santa Clara and Alameda counties are in the orange tier (Tier 3), while San Francisco on Tuesday moved into the yellow, or minimal, risk level (Tier 4).

49ers: The 49ers welcomed the state’s decision that would have allowed about 14,000 fans to watch games at 68,500-seat Levi’s Stadium. But Santa Clara County public health officials said it was too risky to allow any fans into games. County chief executive Dr. Jeff Smith called sports events “super spreaders” that could potentially lead to an outbreak.

“Without some kind of other treatment besides social distancing, having these large congregations is a great risk no matter what,” Smith said in a news conference. “That was the very first activity that was precluded because it was such a high risk. It will be the last one that the county would consider opening.”

Under the state guidelines, the ⁦‪@49ers‬⁩ could potentially host 14,000 fans at Levi’s Stadium but the county's directive supersedes the state’s. bit.ly/3dMsk4h 10/20/20, 10:27 PM

49ERS WILL HAVE TO DEAL WITH SOME SAINTS FANS:

The plan announced Tuesday will start with 3,000 tickets for Sunday’s game, increasing to 6,000 fans for November games with San Francisco and Atlanta and up to 15,000 in December for games against Kansas City and Minnesota barring any changes in local health and safety guidelines.

A limited number of tickets for players, the team and other required NFL obligations also were approved. Both the Saints and the mayor’s office reminded everyone to keep wearing masks and practicing physical distancing and hand washing.

Sharks: The NHL season is expected to start Jan. 1, but the state’s guidelines released Tuesday apply to outdoor events only. Based on Santa Clara County’s reaction Tuesday it is doubtful public health officials will permit fans inside SAP Center anytime soon. Smith, the county executive, indicated Tuesday that until the country has an effective treatment or vaccine for the novel coronavirus, large gatherings will not be allowed in the county.

Warriors: San Francisco public health officials have some time before deciding what to allow for the Chase Center and Golden State Warriors games. Like the Sharks, the Warriors’ indoor facility poses a more challenging situation for health officials. The NBA season is expected to start in January or February. As we’ve learned this year, a lot can happen in three months.

Giants: The San Francisco Giants have even more time before learning the fate of their 2021 season. They would not play at Oracle Park until the end of spring training, perhaps late March. San Francisco public health officers have plenty of time to decide if they will follow the current state directive — if it even applies in the spring.

Athletics: The Oakland A’s face a similar situation as their cross-Bay MLB team. The major difference is the Athletics will follow guidelines from Alameda County public health officers. County officials did not immediately respond to questions about how they might handle outdoor pro sports events should the situation be the same next spring. But the public health officers and the A’s have plenty of time to deal with whatever happens.

Good one....

4- FAN GETS DYING WISH TO MEET KLAY THOMPSON

Golden State Warriors guard Klay Thompson helped bring immeasurable joy to a terminally ill Bay Area woman and her husband.

When the NBA superstar learned one of his biggest fans is dying of cancer and has an estimated two to six weeks to live, he helped make her wish come true by joining her on a video call on Monday.

It was wonderful. He was just an absolute gentleman, a real kind man. I loved every minute of it,” said Deborah Wright, 62, of the East Bay. “I didn’t think it would ever happen. It’s been on my bucket list for years, but I never thought there would be a chance he’d want to talk to me."

The impetus for the encounter was her husband Randall Wright. He took to social media last week to throw up a long-range shot, asking if Thompson could virtually call his wife who he affectionately refers to as his bride.

“I ask for nothing else,” Randall Wright wrote in the post. “No gifts, money, or anything...just for the possibility of a visit from Mr. Thompson.”

Wright published a post and tagged KTVU’s Frank Somerville, who shared the message on his Facebook page last Friday. The post gained some traction and was forwarded to the Warriors public relations staff. By Monday, the couple was chatting with Thomspon.

The free-flowing conversation featured a guest appearance from Thompson’s bulldog Rocco as they talked about sports and Wright’s relationship with the Warriors.

“It really felt like we’ve been friends forever. He was so down to earth. We could’ve talked for hours. It just felt like that,” said Wright.

She was initially drawn to the Dubs because of their teamwork. But a post-game interview from years back after Thompson had a very productive night is what solidified her love for the all-star. She said Thompson excitedly gave credit to his teammates and deferred from self-praise.

And speaking of self-praise, while discussing her battle with cancer, Wright mentioned her four children and three grandkids. What she didn’t say initially is she and her husband adopted those children--  her husband interjected with the touching detail.

“They were not born under my heart, they were born in it,” she said.

Wright recently had to make an unimaginably difficult decision after her metastatic breast cancer spread to other areas of her body. She was preparing for a procedure to attack cancer in the lining of her brain and spinal cord, but doctors determined her central nervous system was being impacted and the chance for a successful round of chemotherapy was low.

“Right now, I had to think, ‘Do I want quantity of life or quality of life?’” said Wright. “I chose quality.”

And while doctors have given Wright just two to six weeks left to live, she may have gained some extra time from recent brain radiation treatment.

“Judging on how I feel mentally, I’m thinking we did get some time out of that,” she said.
