ROB DEAN ANSWERS SOME QUESTIONS:

Q: The news release said he will be returning to his job duties July 2. There’s a sense that maybe that won’t happen because of the optics. He might be pushed aside entirely and maybe even pressured to relinquish his ownership stake. Can you address that?
A: I think that’s an unfair narrative for Larry and definitely not correct. We expressed in the press release that we, like Major League Baseball, were concerned with the actions that occurred. MLB did a detailed investigation and gave Larry a suspension. At the same time we decided along with some ownership guidelines from the league that it was time to make appropriate governance changes as well. We are all looking forward to Larry coming back and being an effective president and CEO on July 2.
Q: Do you expect to move a little bit behind the curtain in terms of day-to-day operations when he does return?
A: Yes, I don’t expect to be onstage next year at the Play Ball lunch.
Q: Has anything changed in the relationship between baseball operations and ownership since Larry stepped aside. In particular, has Farhan Zaidi been given more autonomy?
A: I don’t believe so. I talk to Farhan more than I did when Larry was here, but I believe Farhan was keeping Larry up to speed on what was going on as well. I think Farhan has all the autonomy he needs, wants and deserves as president of baseball operations.
Q: Farhan is already being criticized not so much for the moves he’s made, but the moves he hasn’t made. How do you feel about the job he’s done so far?
A: We all have extreme confidence in Farhan’s ability. We’re not taking a short-term view here and I love his mantra of making one smart baseball decision after another. I know he made a lot of baseball decisions over the last four months. Some of them may not be large. But he definitely has a process and takes all those moves into consideration to make this team better, not only today but in the long term.
Q: So winning in 2019 remains a goal?
A: Absolutely. I believe it was number one on Larry’s strategic goals.
Q: You’re not a fan of the word “rebuild”?
A: No, I don’t think it’s a fair depiction. We have one of the largest payrolls in baseball. We have a tremendous group of veteran players who have won multiple World Series. At the same time we’re trying to develop young and athletic newcomers. I don’t think “rebuild” has to be exclusionary of winning today.
Q: You have some marketable players, most notably Madison Bumgarner. It’s presumed if Farhan gets an offer of prospects he can’t refuse, he would be wise to pull the trigger given where the organization is. What are your thoughts on that?
A: Madison has not had a full healthy season in the last couple. He looks pretty healthy right now. Farhan is going to have to make some of those decisions, but it’s premature for us as ownership to speculate.
Q: The organization has had a reversal of fortune. The brand has taken a hit with a couple of losing seasons and off-the-field issues, such as Giants co-owner Charles Johnson’s political donation and what happened recently with the Baer video. What will it take to change the organization’s fortunes and begin another upswing?
A: It has been a difficult offseason for sure, but it’s just refocusing everyone’s efforts like we’ve done in the past in doing the right things. We have a great senior management team. We have a new president of baseball operations, Farhan, who we have a lot of faith in and believe he’s doing the right things on the baseball field. We’ll continue to mend the relationships in the community. By doing the right things on and off the field we will continue to be a preeminent franchise and we will be back.
Q: Harmon and Sue Burns were very benevolent investors, loved the organization, players and coaches. Their team barbecues were a high point of the year. What did you learn most from your in-laws that you can use as you expand your role?
A: Harmon and Sue always wanted everyone to feel like this was family. The genesis of that barbecue was really to give players and their families a relaxing atmosphere with the front office and other partners without autographs or photos. It was that, along with the fact they were really fans first, and this was a community asset they were always trying to make better.
Q: I heard in San Diego you came down to your seat in the front row and saw that Pudge Rodriguez was sitting in it. You let him stay there because his kid was pitching for the Giants. Is that true?
A: Actually, he was sitting in the second row, and I came down and realized there was a Hall of Famer in the second row so I offered my seats to Pudge so he could watch Dereck throw.
