BTW THE GIANTS HAVE NO CHOICE BUT TO TRADE BUM AND THE BETTER HE DOES THE BETTER RETURN HE'LL GET --HOW ELSE ARE THEY GOING TO REBUILD??
But there is one very big name -- one very big player -- without an extension, and there's no indication he will reach a deal before he hits the free-agent market next fall. The Giants' Madison Bumgarner is destined to be the most prominent star in trade talks this summer and, inevitably, the subject of debate inside and outside the San Francisco organization. He will serve as a litmus test of how clubs weigh the most advanced analytics vs. the old-school eye test.
GIANTS: ILL I AM SAYING IS GIVE FARHAN A CHANCE
-JUST HOW BAD WILL THEY BE OR COULD THEY SURPRISE??
SI's 2019 Prediction: 62-100, Fifth in NL West
SI:
A Modest Proposal From Joe Sheehan: When the Giants hired Farhan Zaidi away from the Dodgers, it was seen as an acknowledgement that they needed their own young, smart GM to oversee a rebuild. In four months since taking the job, though, Zaidi has done...nothing. He’s made one trade, acquiring a reliever who was later designated for assignment. The biggest free agent he signed was Drew Pomeranz. Zaidi neither moved the Giants closer to the playoffs in 2019, nor closer to them in 2022. With Madison Bumgarner, Brandon Belt, Brandon Crawford, and Evan Longoria, Zaidi doesn’t have a core that can challenge the Dodgers, but he does have one that can dominate the in-season trade market. A healthy Bumgarner—something we haven’t seen for a full season since 2016—could swing the AL East, NL East, or NL Central races. By dealing him this summer, Zaidi will add desperately needed talent to a fallow Giants’ farm system.

MOVES:
iants skipper Bruce Bochy has announced several notable roster decisions to reporters, including Kerry Crowley of the Bay Area News Group (links to Twitter). Of particular note, out-of-options players Alen Hanson and Tom Murphy will not be carried on the active roster, meaning they’ll either need to be traded or exposed to waivers.
Recently acquired, right-handed-hitting outfielders Michael Reed and Connor Joe(who also has infield experience) are both slated to have MLB jobs, per Bochy. And the same holds for veteran third baseman Pablo Sandoval, who’s said to be in the club’s plans for the time being.
Hanson, 26, played a big role for the Giants last year. He was excellent in the first half of the season but faded down the stretch, ending the year with a .252/.274/.425 slash. While it’s rarely wise to read too much into spring stats, it’s hard to ignore the fact that Hanson racked up twenty strikeouts in his 54 plate appearances in camp.
As for Murphy, he was only just plucked off waivers from the division-rival Rockies. Evidently, the plan was to nab him in hopes of slipping him to Triple-A through the wire. Whether that works out remains to be seen.
It seemingly remains a fluid situation in San Francisco, with late-spring decisions from other teams potentially still intervening. As Andrew Baggarly of The Athletic notes on Twitter, the evening’s announcements appear to indicate that either Sandoval or out-of-options outfielder Mac Williamson will ultimately need to be bumped from the roster. If the latter is sent packing, that’d seem to leave Joe and Redd (with an assist from Yangervis Solarte) responsible for manning one corner spot while also filling in at times for left-handed-hitting outfielders Steven Duggar and Gerardo Parra.
SI PROJECTION:
New team president Farhan Zaidi might be the brightest executive in baseball not named Brian Cashman, but he’s inherited a roster full of bloated legacy contracts and a shallow farm system. It’s unclear whether Buster Posey will resemble his old self after returning from a hip injury, and Madison Bumgarner is a prime midseason trade candidate with his contract due to expire at the end of the season. Shortstop Brandon Crawford remains a joy to watch field grounders at shortstop and the team is banking on surges from power-hitting outfielder Mac Williamson and the speedy Steven Duggar. The problem is that it’s totally unclear whether Williamson or Duggar are everyday big leaguers. If the team stays healthy, manager Bruce Bochy is capable of milking a few extra wins out of his side in his last year at the helm of the team. Even then, this team probably maxes out at 78 wins.

Draft analyst: #49ers feel Quinnen Williams is 'more special' than Nick Bosa
knbr.com/?p=770367 pic.twitter.com/q9zcjUkNkJ |
he Arizona Cardinals, with offensive-minded head coach Kliff Kingsbury running the show, are expected to select Kyler Murray at No. 1 overall. They would ideally trade Josh Rosen, last year’s first-round pick. The 49ers would then hand-pick their top prospect at No. 2 overall.
It’s starting to sound like their view of that player is different than the public’s.
The 49ers are reportedly “gushing” over Alabama defensive tackle Quinnen Williams, according to Walter Football’s Charlie Campbell. Campbell communicated those thoughts when he joined KNBR’s Gary and Larry earlier this week.
Here is his soundbite:
- “I spoke with people high up with the 49ers at the Combine, and they were just gushing about Quinnen WIlliams. They felt Bosa was an excellent player, a bit of safe pick, probably more of a position of need heading into free agency given how good DeForest Buckner was for the team last year. But they just had more emotion in the voice, more excitement for Quinnen Williams. They felt his upside was just off the charts when you consider last year was really his first season of playing time in the SEC, to dominate it in the fashion he did, and really moving inside, adding the weight to move inside, they felt the sky is the limit for what this guy could be. They just seem to think that Williams was more special as a player, had more upside, and really they like the makeup of him as well. And they didn’t dog Bosa at all. They were just really impressed with Williams, in terms of his character, his football character. And so, I heard that there from people high up with the 49ers. And speaking with some people at other teams, I have heard that some of the scouts in their conversations, they have also heard from 49ers people they are really high on Williams and really think the world of him. That’s the player that’s kind of tugging at the heartstrings.”
Campbell, who has earned a sterling reputation for his accuracy in mock drafts, said the 49ers hiring defensive line coach Kris Kocurek deems Bosa as somewhat of a misfit. Kocurek’s wide-nine principles spread out the defensive line and allow speed rushers to use space to reach the quarterback. Earlier this month, the 49ers traded a 2020 second-round pick for Dee Ford, who perfectly fits Kocurek’s system.
