BULPENNING REACTION:
t started with the front office encouraging Melvin to exercise a quick hook with starters. Once the A’s became contenders, management was adamant about starters not pitching a third time through the order.
Now, after the injuries to Anderson and Manaea, Billy Beane, David Forst and their analytics team are turning it up a notch by bullpenning on select games — eliminating the starter and going with relievers the entire way. And frustration has been brewing in the clubhouse. Multiple sources have told The Athletic that several players don’t like the gimmicky baseball and believe that it’s too late in the season to try something so new and foreign. Why change now?
“The only thing I will say is we’re constantly working with Bob to put our team in best position to win,” Forst said in a phone interview Tuesday.
Melvin is the one left to continually explain the strategy to players (and the media). But even the best explanation won’t ease the frustrations of players.
One source said the drastic and sudden change has left players not knowing what’s going on and when. They know it’s not coming from Melvin but rather people from “up top.”
As Hendriks worked a scoreless first inning last Saturday, Mengden was in the bullpen. He went through his quirky warm-up routine, with his arms flapping and bent-over stretches. When Hendriks folded in the second, Melvin went to Danny Coulombe, who gave up a two-run double.
Mengden, who had been up and down in the bullpen three times in that span, finally entered the game in the third inning. The Mariners knocked him around for three earned runs in just two innings.
This begs the question: was Mengden’s rough outing his fault or management’s for the last-minute switch?
“It’s going to affect the routine a little bit,” Mengden said after the game. “But you have to adjust to it. It’s a little different sitting down for an inning or two in the bullpen. But playing at this level you have to be ready for anything and make adjustments on the fly.”
