why Colin Kaepernick doesn’t currently have a job in the NFL.
While in New York City, promoting FanDuel’s new slate of free entry golf contests in midtown Manhattan, the legendary quarterback pointed to the kind of QB Kaepernick is as one major part of his struggles under center.
“That style of quarterback, everybody thought was going to take over the NFL,” he told For The Win on Tuesday. “You look at guys who had success in college, that only had success one year. Usually those guys, the next year, it’s very difficult on them.
“The league has figured out how to defend it,” he continued. “If I’m playing defense, I want the quarterback to run so I can hit him. In the pocket, you can’t really hit him. So you look at Tim Tebow — he’s a great guy, does a lot of great things. But when you complete 40-something percent of your passes, even in the low 50s, you’re not going to make it.”
But what about what Kaepernick did for much of 2016 on the sidelines? Isn’t that a factor?
“I’m sure there are some distraction issues,” Montana replied. “When we were playing with Bill Walsh, if you were a distraction, he didn’t care how good you were, if you didn’t mix in with the team, you weren’t there very long.”
Montana says he doesn’t spend a lot of his retired days watching football. He’s focused on the businesses he has to run and he says he doesn’t “live in the past much,” although he’s forced to in many situations. So he may not have known that former Niners coach Chip Kelly said that Kaepernick is “zero distraction and a really talented player who can help you win.”
“He has to say that,” Montana said with a chuckle.
“It’s not that his cause wasn’t great,” the ex-Niners great added. “It’s just what you do, when you do it. It’s a personal thing. He had the right to do it, if it affects what he’s doing and what that organization does … but then he wasn’t playing well
