J.D. Martinez, OF: Martinez has been the most talked about player among the Tigers' big names, because he's affordable ($11.75 million) on a one-year commitment. His .908 OPS was the third best among all qualifying outfielders in the Major Leagues in 2016.
Most likely destination: The Giants. The Tigers and Giants have been in contact since early in the offseason, and San Francisco wants to add another middle-of-the-order bat. The Yankees are one possibility if they don't add Encarnacion or Trumbo.

The veteran’s committee made Selig a slam dunk. With 12 votes needed for election, Schuerholtz got 16, Selig 15 and Lou Piniella 7.
The rest of the finalists got less than five votes: McGwire, Will Clark, Albert Belle, Harold Baines, Orel Hershiser, Davey Johnson and George Steinbrenner.
Selig said at his news conference Monday that “to be included in the Hall of Fame of a sport that I love has left me almost speechless. I’m never speechless.”
As Selig came off the podium, reporter John Shea of the San Francisco Chronicle asked Selig about the A’s stadium situation — 93 months after the commissioner formed a committee to look into the team’s future home.
“You can’t finish everything,” Selig said. “I think Rob (Manfred) will do that.”

FLORIO: "GROWING BELIEF" BAALKE IS DONE - HOW CAN HE NOT BE?
The 49ers currently have lost 10 games in a row, and there’s a growing belief that G.M. Trent Baalke won’t be back. Would ownership also move on from coach Chip Kelly, or would the team set up an inherently awkward and dysfunctional arrangement in which a G.M. is hired but is prevented at least for a year from hiring his own coach?
If Baalke goes, the best approach could be to elevate assistant G.M. Tom Gamble and let Kelly and Gamble run the show. If that happens, Kelly may want to keep Kaepernick around.
The other question is whether any other team, owner, G.M., or coach will shy away from Kaepernick given his refusal to stand for the national anthem. Regardless of whether it shold be a factor (it shouldn’t), the reality is that any team considering the addition of a veteran quarterback (and there likely will be plenty of them) will at least consider the impact of signing a signal-caller who may spark hundreds of angry callers to local sport-talk radio claiming that they will never attend or watch another game if Kaepernick becomes an employee of the team.

THURSDAY:
• The AFC West. Oakland is 10-2, Kansas City 9-3, Denver 8-4 in the best division, unquestionably, in football. This game’s almost more important for Oakland than for Kansas City, because the Chiefs control so many of the tiebreaker edges and because the Chiefs have the most advantageous schedule of the West contenders down the stretch. With a win, Kansas City sweeps the series from Oakland this year and takes a commanding lead in division tiebreakers at 4-0 in division games; Oakland would be 2-2 and Denver 1-3. It’s certainly not a must-win if Oakland wants to win the division, but the Raiders would need help if they lose Thursday night—and the Raiders have a Week 17 game at Denver in the balance.
• The Patriots. Oakland crept ahead of New England (10-2) in the race for the top seed with a win over Buffalo on Sunday. Because the Raiders and Patriots haven’t played each other, the first tiebreaker is conference record; they’re both 7-1 in AFC games. Then it goes to common games. Oakland 2-0, New England 2-1, with the Pats’ Week 4 loss to Buffalo the stumble. The top seed is very much in play, because New England’s stretch run is tough: resurgent Baltimore at home, then Denver on the road, Jets at home, and Miami on the road in a game the Dolphins might need to make the playoffs. And Miami’s beaten the Pats three straight at home.
CFB:
-Committee got it right
Shortly after the announcement of the CFP semifinals on Sunday, No. 3 Ohio State was deemed a 3.5-point favorite over No. 2 Clemson in the Fiesta Bowl. To nobody's surprise, No. 1 Alabama is an 11-point favorite over No. 4 Washington in the Peach Bowl. Alabama quickly moved up to 14 points.
Both games will be played on New Year's Eve.
We are still awaiting the lines to win the entire playoff but will have those as soon as they are out.

Winner: The SEC. Because it will eventually regain a place of prominence, and the precedent set this weekend for non-champs means it’s only a matter of time until the SEC sends two teams to the semifinals … or three.
Loser: Penn State. The Nittany Lions won the toughest division in the toughest conference in the country and beat Ohio State. But an early-season loss to Pittsburgh proved their undoing with the committee.
Winner: Alabama. Not only did the Tide claim the No. 1 seed — like there was any doubt — it also will play a home-away-from-home game in the semifinals: The Georgia Dome, site of the Peach Bowl, is also home to the SEC title game.
Loser: Big 12. No semifinalist for the second time in three years because its champion, Oklahoma, was only No. 7 in the final rankings. (Blame non-conference losses to Houston and Ohio State.)
Winner: Western Michigan. The undefeated Broncos earned a much-deserved spot in the Cotton Bowl as the top team from the Group of Five. And yes, they can beat Wisconsin.
Loser: Sugar Bowl. Sorry, but No. 7 Oklahoma against No. 14 Auburn is Sugar-light compared to past matchups.
Winner: Orange Bowl. Jim Harbaugh and Michigan against Florida State? Yes, please.
Losers: St. Petersburg and Heart of Dallas bowls. Somebody had to get the 5-7 teams. (Even worse: North Texas vs. Army in the heart of Dallas is a rematch of a game played in October.)
Winner: Las Vegas Bowl. In place of a Pac-12 participant — the conference couldn’t fill the slot — the bowl lands Houston to face MW representative San Diego State. Donnel Pumphrey against Ed Oliver should be terrific..
Loser: Standards of excellence. With 40 bowl games, clunkers are unavoidable. For example: Idaho vs. Colorado State … Or Eastern Michigan vs. Old Dominion … Or New Mexico vs. UTSA. Or … Eh, you get the picture.
Winner: ESPN. More than 1,000 hours of bowl coverage will undoubtedly fare better in the ratings than whatever the WWL would have shown otherwise.
Loser: Fans. Columbus/Clemson to Phoenix is a long way and loads of money. Same with Washington fans considering Atlanta. The unfortunate reality of the playoff system.
Winner: Proponents of an eight-team playoff. It’s years and years away, but any controversy with the four-team model (i.e., Penn State’s snub) adds incremental pressure to expand.
Loser: Proponents of an eight-team playoff. Nothing will change the system faster than the SEC getting hosed, and that didn’t happen.
Winner: Service Academies. All three made the postseason, and Navy almost climbed into the New Year’s Six.
Loser: Louisville. Had the Cardinals beaten Kentucky — this is football, after all — they would be headed to the Orange Bowl instead of the team they beat by 43 points (Florida State).
Ultimate winners: Alabama and Ohio State. The powerhouses handle their business in the semifinals, then collide Jan. 9 in Tampa for the title. Alabama wins its second consecutive title and stakes claim to being one of the greatest teams in history.
